To us, differentiated reading instruction is when you create curriculum best suited for each individual student to learn how to read at their own level in the best way possible for each learner.

During reading and Language Arts, Routines need to be established to allow time for both whole group instruction, and for small group time. This allows for a community of learning to be established (whole group), and readers can learn with classmates of a similar reading level.

The five elements of reading instruction include phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.

Reading instruction with special needs students is most successful with systematic explicit instruction that is related to the curriculum.

Assessment is the root of differentiation was surprising. Although, knowing there are so many different ways of assessment, thinking that the root of differentiation would be the type of lesson being taught.

Giving a low skill first grade student a very explicit skill-oriented curriculum in order to give them the opportunity to have major growth by the end of 1st grade. Giving a high skill first grade student a comprehensive curriculum will give them the chance to grow most by the end of 1st grade.

It is surprising that there are schools that adopt a reading program that doesn't have differentiation. The very best, most well thought out, heavily researched and historically important published programs have differentiation in them.

Establishing flexible routines well enough so that when the teacher is aware of particular students' needs, there will be at least some times in the classrooms where different students are doing different things to address those needs.

Daily assessment or frequent assessment throughout a sequence of study that's very close to our instructional decision making tomorrow and can really help us understand how to modify the plans that we basically made to benefit various students.

The most effective teachers are always on their feet and looking over the students shoulder. They're listening to the students when they partner read. They're watching when the kids write. They get in, intervene and give mini lessons.

During the video, one of the panel members talks about good differentiated reading instruction programs versus bad ones. we would like to know more about current programs, and how to tell if they are worth using in the classroom.

The members of the panel debate the pull out method, and when/how much individual instruction is appropriate. We would like to know how much individualized reading instruction should take place in successful differentiated reading programs.

When the video address ELL students, they say the student's integration into the classroom begins with his father. Is there a way, as teachers, to prepare the parents of ELL students to help their children be more successful in the classroom?
