They happened to find a dead German falling from the sky. They investigated and looted his body. Looting was illegal and could be punished by death. The military saw the group looting and chased after them. Kolya is his name and he is Lev's cellmate that just got escorted to the cell. He has a piece of sausage and gives it to Lev. He also has a journal that he writes in, even in the dark. Lev questions this man as they speak to eachother until Kolya falls asleep. This makes Lev jealous because he is an insomniac and wishes he could fall asleep fast. The colonel then tasks them with finding a dozen eggs for his daughters wedding cake by Thursday. Most of them said no, but one kid said he knew someone near a castle that had chickens. He would sleep with a shotgun in case anyone tried to steal the chickens, and he would hide some eggs so the Germans wouldn't take them. This was Koyla and Lev's break away and they planned on going to the castle. This was interrupted when a giant man was talking to Lev. This man said he had 1 dozen eggs at his home. He said they were 1000 rubles. They only had 300 but the giant man let them in anyway. Both Lev and Koyla asked where the eggs were and they said they kept them in a samovar. They saw a big cloth hanging down and what they thought to be animal meat hanging on hooks. It turns out that it were human body parts that were hanging and the giant man and his wife started attacking Lev and Koyla. Both managed to escape and found some soldiers. They went to the building just to see it had been destroyed and now was just a pile of ruble. Lev was sad and kept trying to pursuade Kolya to stay and help look for survivors, but the army had already searched for people.
