Established in Boston in 1821

Developed because of the gap between elementary school and universities

A disadvantage of English Classical School is that the curricula of these schools widely varied, some focusing on college preparation and others focusing on general curriculum for students who wouldn't finish their studies. Even though the high school was free the public was resistant to paying additional school taxes. They didn't meet the needs of all the students.

An advantage was that there was another stepping stone for students before they reached a university level. Parents viewed the high school as a better stepping stone to a better job.

Horace Mann was the leading advocate for the establishing these schools.

It shaped education by changing the dreams and aspirations of America.

1. Development: Suggested in 1749 to replace the Latin grammar school; in 1751, the Franklin Academy was established, free of religious influence and offering a variety of practical subjects (math, astronomy, athletics, navigation, dramatics, bookkeeping)

2. Advantages: It accepted both girls and boys. Students were able to choose some of their own courses, thus setting the precedent for elective courses. It was a practical curriculum.

3. Disadvantages: It was only for people who could afford the tuition.

4. Name: Benjamin Franklin

5. How it shaped education: Sparked the establishment of 6,000 academies in the century that followed. The original Franklin Academy eventually became the University of Pennsylvania.

Development: Started with teachers turning their homes into schools. They taught reading writing and computation.

Advantage: Both boys and girls are there. Teachers had a passion for teaching and for the students. Provided more of an individual approach.

Disadvantage: There is no curriculum or certification of teachers. The teachers weren't always qualified, but were well known and liked by the community.

How it shaped education: Made it more common for women to be teachers instead of men. The focus was more on educational aspects and not so much learning how to work the farm (boys) or homemaking (girls).

Colonial schools were developed so students could learn to read and write specifically for the Bible.

Established 22 years after they arrived to the new world.

An advantage is they really focused on making sure children could read and write.

Disadvantages were girls didn't get to go to school for more than two years, and they didn't focus on math and science as much as reading and writing. There was also child abuse and verbal abuse.

Christopher Lamb

He rejected the rod approach. He instead used reward and punishment.

It established many of the norms used in schools today.
