Once pollination occurs, the fertilized flowers produce seeds, which enable the associated plant to reproduce and/or form fruit.

Bees don’t engage in the pollination process merely because they love flowers and plants! They reap huge benefits from participating in the process. As they fly from flower-to-flower, they move pollen from plant-to-plant on their legs, which is how pollination occurs. Because honey bees use pollen in their reproductive process, they collect it from all plants, even those not requiring cross-pollination via insects.

The intricate way bees are able to communicate is by completing a dance. This dance provides bees knowledge of where to go to collect their pollen, and how to find their way back to their respective hive. The show, Phineas and Ferb, provides a brief but helpful explanation of how bees use this dance as the Fireside Girls perform their waggle dance song.

Kidd utilizes the structure and diversity of Bees to provide symbolism within the Novel. For example, August can be considered as the Queen bee as she is the oldest, wisest, and often portrayed as the glue that holds the foundation of the Boatwright house together through the toughest times. As you would expect a Queen Bee to do, she often provides meaningful advice, such as

“The hardest thing on earth is choosing what matters” (Kidd 147).

As she offers this advice to Lily, she lives through her words to be a role model and leader to those around her, making choices as a businesswoman, sister, and undertaker for those in need.

Saint Ambrose was a bishop of Milan who became one of the most influential ecclesiastical figures of the 4th century. There is a legend that as an infant, a swarm of bees settled on his face while he lay in his cradle, leaving behind a drop of honey. His father considered this to be a sign of his future eloquence and 'honeyed tongue'. For this reason, bees and beehives often appear in the saint's symbology.
