there is a wide range of techniques in this chapter. some of these, with quotes are:
- "Ice sparkles in the sun, like diamonds - like jewels" - Simile
- Red there - calling out to me" - Personification / metaphor
- use of short sentences slows down the chapter and builds up suspension and tense.
- "Red - bright like fire. Red - bright like flames" - simile
- "There is laughter and there are arguments, there is joy, there is wanting. the mundane, day-to-day, all here in this room" - The use of asyndeton in this quote speeds up the sentence creating a rushing sense.
- "A kingdom of rocks in the snow and ice" - metaphor

1. "The beard of a winterer" triggers Bo's memories of his father.

2. Bo visits a hill called "Reeves Hill". The station manager is reluctant to let him go because of the cracks in the ice and the threat of falling into lakes of water.

3. Bo is reminicing about his father when he says "Papa - I am here". The author choses to include this to provide some background information on Bo, as his past has been unknown up to this point
Parrett uses italics to introduce an inner monologue in which the reader is inside Bo’s head. He is talking to his father based on a childhood memory, indicating that Reeves Hill was a location his dad had visited many years ago, and had told him about as a young boy at home in Denmark. In many respects, Bo is following in his father’s footsteps in a number of ways i.e. as a sailor but also by voyaging to the Antarctic.

.
