The Columbian Exchange had many positive and negative effects on the Americas, Europe, and Africa starting when Christopher Columbus sailed to the Americas in 1492 to 1750. It connected these areas by creating a way for people to contact each other from different parts of the world, as well as creating interactions with the Natives of America with new animals, plants, diseases, and weapons. This exchange also promoted the migration of millions of people, forced and voluntary. Although many of the changes, such as the economy being boosted from trade worldwide, took place because of the situation of the time, which was the want for more power by having the most land, the effects are still showing today.

Europe would use their manufactured goods that the New World didn’t have and trade for raw materials, ultimately boosting the economy. The new colonies that Europe took over boosted their economy, as well as the crops they got from the New World. The crops were able to support their growing population. With all the new crops coming to and from Europe, people were able to farm, giving them a job making money. Because Europe was being enriched with the raw materials to sell to nations that needed it, such as smaller countries in Europe, it was able to continue to gain more economic power. For example, the tomato, potato, and maize trade to Europe made the largest effect on the population, allowing them to feed and sustain a growing population. The European farmers were able to grow these crops in bulk, providing enough for people to either buy for themselves to grow, or buy to eat. This caused the economy to grow better and better.

Effect on the New World

The New World became more popular for trading and moving, ultimately bringing diseases that affected the populations already in the New World. With the people of Europe wanting to move to the New World because of the freedom from European rule, many diseases were brought along that the Native Americans weren’t immune to. This caused a major decrease in the population of the Native people. It allowed for an easier take over of land of the Europeans, as well as taking the remaining population to use as slaves. The introduction of measles, smallpox, influenza, etc., over half of the Native population was wiped out. With more Europeans continuing to come to the New World, more of the Natives would die, eventually leading to the need for more slaves to work for the Europeans. Specifically, smallpox had the greatest impact on the Natives. This was the most devastating disease brought from Europe to the Americas.

African Slave Trade

Africa was used for their people in the global slave trade, ultimately affecting Africa as a whole. The reason for African people being needed as slaves was because the disease brought from Europe, that killed most of the Natives in America. The need for their people as slaves increased dramatically. This caused the population in Africa to decrease. The slave trade was set up to help Europe and the Americas. They were now able to be economically sound with the new slaves working to keep the trading items up, however, Africa was mainly hurt by the amount of people taken from them. There was an estimated 10-15 million slaves that were transported out of Africa. With this many people, Africa was affected politically, socially, and economically.

With the large spread affect of the Columbian Exchange, positive and negative, it shaped how the world is today. The economies of Europe and the Americas are much more advanced and modernized compared to Africa, which still has to fight to keep their economic stability through trading with stronger countries. Although the slave trade is a thing of the past, they still trade goods to try to boost their economy. All in all, the Columbian exchange affected and changed the world over time, as well as created interactions between different parts of the world, spreading new ideas and techniques from different cultures.
