Toyo Miyatake had only black and white colors in this photo. This could be partially because of the time period they were in, where technology wasn't as advanced as it is today, but it also serves a purpose. The shadows that these colors create illicit a feeling of sadness. There is no color, and no happiness, in this photo. The artist did this on purpose to make the viewer feel the seriousness of the situation in this photo.

The artist wants the viewer to feel trapped like the person in the photo. The barbed wire fence is supposed to make viewers feel the intensity of the imprisonment Japanese Americans went through. In a way, I believe the artist also wanted the viewer to feel inspired by the person in this photo. The person is controlling their own fate and trying to cut the wire. They are trying to break free, and it could be an inspiration to viewers.

The purpose of this piece is to inform people of a dark time in history: Japanese internment in America.
A country that birthed from the desire to be free had its own dark secret. Issei, otherwise known as first-generation immigrants from Japan (aka American Citizens) were detained in internment camps due to their race. They were considered threats to national security and that fear only made it even more apparent of the "necessary" actions America was willing to make to protect its citizens.

Toyo Miyatake was a Japanese American. He was born in Japan in 1895 and died in Los Angeles in 1979. Miyatake was imprisoned at an internment camp with his wife and 4 children, so this photo represents his time there. It is a deeply personal and tragic experience for him. Knowing that this was a very real and serious experience for Miyatake makes viewers trust his representation of Japanese internment in America.

The denotation of the picture may only seem like someone cutting a barbed wire but the connotation means a lot more. I implied it as the Japanese-Americans practicing their rights (which were violated multiple times). A few court cases reached the Supreme Court and it raised the question if the curfew order could be enforced only based on race. Gordon Hirabayashi was convicted of a curfew violation and this symbolizes the hand going up to the wire to cut it. Hirabayashi was "breaking free" of the hold the government had on him.

In the image we see a single hand , but it doesn't clearly represent the 120,000 lives that were taken into internment camps. What would happen if one rose to speak up against this injustice? Nothing, because it was deemed as a military necessity. Japanese Americans weren't able to return to normal lives they once had. About 1,500 returned back to Japan.
