Early pioneering groups such as the Harlem Hamfats, with their 1936 hit "Oh Red", as well as Lonnie Johnson, Leroy Carr, Cab Calloway Count Basie and T-Bone Walker, were the early bands that helped R&B take off. As time went on these bands started adding major emphasis on instruments like the electric guitar, the piano, and the saxophone.

In 1949 the term R&B replaced the Billboard category Harlem Hit Parade, also in that year The Huckle Buck by Paul Williams was number one on the charts for almost an entire year, the song was so lit that on more than just one occasion his concerts got shut down for being to riot like.

In the beginning of R&B only African-American people were buying the records, even the record companies localized their sales to black neighborhoods, the only problem with whites not buying the records was that none of the R&B music was ever played on the radio.
That all changed in the early 1950's when white teenagers finally started to catch wind of R&B, for example 40% of sales from Dolphin's of Hollywood were to white people. Johnny Otis who recently signed with Savoy records, started off rolling, he had 10 records in the top 10.
In 1951 Dj Alan Freed started a late night radio show "The Moondog Rock Roll House Party", Freed began referring to the R&B music as Rock and Roll.

In the early 50's an artists named Little Richard started making songs in the jump blues style of the early 1940's which quickly caught the attention of Specialty Records, his music ended up influencing huge names like James Brown. In 1956 an R&B tour took place they toured all over the country and even to Canada, it was so packed that Carl Perkins was quoted saying, " It was dangerous. Lots of kids got hurt." In Annapolis 50,000 to 70,000 tried to attend a concert that only had 8,000 seats.
