Integrated studies should be used whenever it is going to be beneficial for both the teacher and students. An integrated curriculums is helpful to the teacher as it allows them to "manage a crowded curriculum, encourages teachers to collaborate, as well as allowing them to cater to a range of learning styles" (Murdoch, 1997)

It seems there is no limit as to when integrated studies should not be used, however it is important to understand the limitations when using an integrated curriculum. Some have said that it can be difficult for educators to find the time to collaborate with one another and there is often lack of time to plan effective units. (Menzi, 2017).

As we know, we all learn in our own unique way. As there are many learning styles, it is important for teachers to adapt their approach to teaching. By using an integrated curriculum, teachers are challenging their students to make connections as they look at the 'bigger picture' (Murdoch, 1997). By using an integrated teaching approach, educators are able to choose a theme and then bring this theme across the whole curriculum, allowing students to engage in a variety of learning styles and hopefully, gain a broader understanding on the overall topic. Image 3, below, shows how teachers are able to use a theme and spread this across a multitude of subjects. (Drake and Burns, 2017) By choosing a topic of interest within the classroom, teachers will find that their students will be more engaged and become more active participants in their learning. It allows students to understand more of their world and to practice a variety of skills within their education. Overall, integrated studies seem to have a positive outcome for the different learning styles amongst students.

Integrated studies the combination of two or more areas of the curriculum. The Australian Curriculum has been designed in a way that "rather than being self-contained or fixed; disciplines are interconnected, dynamic and growing. A discipline-based curriculum should allow for cross-disciplinary learning that broadens and enriches each student's learning" as stated in the document "the shape of the Australian curriculum." (Shape of the Australian curriculum, 2012)
With this in mind, we can understand that integrated studies allows for the best learning possibilities for students. By being flexible in lesson plans and using a range of teaching strategies, students are given endless opportunities in their learning.
