The work contained the biblical scene of Jesus' last meal with his apostles, but Veronese also included other characters and objects present, such as a dog, a jester, and a servant with a bleeding nose. Though the work is beautiful, he received heavy criticism during the time of the Inquisition. He defended his right to paint what he wanted, and the tribunal only suggested that he change the name rather than destroy the painting.
