Each cluster will be assigned a factor to evaluate:
1– role of technology
2– role of strategy/tactics
3 – role of mobilization of resources

Make a claim about the factor: How decisive was it in determining the outcome of the war?

Identify support for your claim using facts that you know. Refer to your Revision Notes.

Although at the beginning of the war, technology was not decisive in determining the outcome of the war, towards the end of WWI, technology became a very decisive factor, with the most important technological improvement being the invention of the tank. By 1918, Allied tanks regularly broke through German defensive lines, which led to the defeat of the German army.

Indecisive Technological Advancements:
Poison Gas
Machine guns
Early aircraft

Decisive Technological Advancements:
Tanks

While it can be argued that the naval blockade of the allies played a significant role in the Allied victory of the First world war, it can be argued that the Tactics and Strategy did not influence their victory to a large extent due to the inefficiencies of the tactics and strategies on land and air of both central and allied powers.

- War of Attrition eg. Battle of Somme: British offensive against German forces resulting in very little gain and high casualties
- Using 18th century tactics with modern weapons
- Ludendorff offensive: effective at first collapsed due to German lack of resources
- Planed undeveloped and inaccurate.
- Naval blockade

While both the Central Powers and Allies had conscription and increased women in the workforce, the mobilization of human and economic resources was a highly decisive factor to ensure Allied victory. This was because the Allies were able to fight a prolonged war, by having more resources, and resources from a wider range of sources, while the Central Powers did not.

Facts
- Allied colonies
- More food resources
- Naval Blockade
- Lack of reserves (Ludendorff Offensive)

Indecisive
- Conscription
- Woman in the workforce.
