The Salem Witch Trial began and ended in the year 1692. The accusations began after two young girls started acting strange after asking for their fortunes. A slave, Tituba, confessed and because of that her life was spared. After this incident more and more people began accusing others of witchcraft and many more were accused. This frenzy continued until September 22, after a mass hanging occurred. Many accused witches were released from jail soon after. 20 people were hanged total in the end of this chaos. The Witch Trial Hysteria took it's closing after the governor's own wife was accused of witchcraft.

One of the main causes of the Salem Witch Trial was the class division. The class division was caused by the wealth and political difference between the people of Salem Village. While the people on the eastern half of the village gained in wealth and political influence, the people in the western half farmed poorer land and lost political power. (Doc E) This may have caused the poor people to become jealous of the rich and is why they accused them of witchcraft. Clearly, the class division was a main cause of the Salem Witch Trial.

Another possible cause of the Salem Witch Trial occurring was ignorance. According to document D, "...nothing but the blindness of the bewildered community saved them from well deserved punishment." Some people were acting that innocent people were witches, who were torturing them. This was most likely not true. Just because of ignorance many innocent people were killed.
