Written by Seymour Simon
This book explores how volcanoes can rapidly change the Earth's surface through explosive eruptions. The text includes the various types, how they form, and the geological processes behind volcanic eruptions. Featuring photos and illustrations enhances the students understanding of volcanic activity. Simon does a great job of explaining the science of volcanoes and the complex concepts in a way that young readers can understand and apply. Beyond the science of volcanoes, Simon discusses world-known volcanoes along with their history and the impact their eruptions had on the environment and human life.

As a teacher, I can see myself using this text with older elementary students into early middle school.

Similar to "Volcanoes," Simon presents the information in this book in a way using language that young readers can comprehend. The text covers what earthquakes are, how they occur, and their effect on Earth and human life. This text again has detailed photographs and illustrations to visually show the power of earthquakes. Simon explains the role of tectonic plates, seismic waves, and other technology used to measure and make predictions of earthquakes.

On this adventure, her goal is to explore beneath the Earth's surface and give her students a hands-on learning experience. Ms. Frizzle transforms the bus into a drilling vehicle through the Earth's layers. The class explores the crust, mantle, and core while learning about their composition, temperature and the roles they place in Earth's structure. The students learn about different types of rocks, too! From igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic and how they form throughout natural processes. The MagicSchoolbus will always be one of my favorite children's book, especially when teaching science!

This text is great for blending humor and student-friendly facts with science into an entertaining read-aloud. This story is written from "Earth's" point of view! In my opinion, this is such a fun spin on things for students! With an exciting introduction to personification, this text is written from "her childhood" which was more than 4 billion years ago, all the way until the present day. The focus is in earth's biography (it's formation), major milestones, fun facts, it's "personality," and environmental awareness. This text can be read in a fun storytelling perspective to teach science at the children's level.

Written by Thomas Kingsley Troupe

This book is a fairy-tale science story that investigates the properties of matter and their changes of state. In this story, the "big bad wolf" is a scientist and the "three little pigs" are smart piglets. The plot is set up like a battle between the two. Each pig uses different building materials: straw, sticks, and bricks. The story explains how each material reacts to the wolf's huffing and puffing, which is a fun and easy way to understand real scientific principles like the strengths of solids vs the weaknesses of gas and liquids. Another example is the role of forces and why certain materials are better when building strong houses. This book is a great way to use interactive learning by making abstract concepts a little easier to grasp through relatable explanations and engaging visuals.

Written by Carole Lindstrom

Another fictional story to tie scientific concepts into a unit!

This story is about a young girl who learns from her grandmother about how to protect the planet and be a caretaker of Earth. She learns that water is sacred and essential to our daily life and devotes her life to defend it from anything that could harm it. This is another great, culturally diverse text that brings in a cross-curricular view. The story highlights the cultural significance of water in some indigenous traditions. Focusing on themes of unity, activism, and hope, this story can inspire young readers to understand their role in protecting Earth. Emphasizing this importance to children is very important.
