This is good for K-2 because it uses simple language and 1-2 lines of text on each page. There is a frequent use of rhyming which would be helpful for emergent readers. The images are very detailed and help to add meaning to the text.

There is about a paragraph of text on each page with mainly familiar vocabulary but some words that could cause trouble for younger readers. Nonetheless, it would be on a 3rd-4th grade level. The concept of this book is complex in that it uses figurative language and refers to abstract themes that may not be common to readers.

It uses a mix of complex sentences as well as onomatopoeias and repetition. In order to understand this book, it does not require that students have any previous background knowledge which makes it an excellent choice for students in the 3rd grade range.

It is relatively complex due to the length of text and the minimal aid from the illustrations. It uses some complex words, mainly adjectives, which would put it around a 3rd-4th grade level of understanding. The book teaches about friendship between marine life which children can then transfer to their own life experiences.

There is significantly more text than other books and less pictures. This book has a rarely seen topic in children's books, homelessness. This could be a very relevant book for students who are housing insecure because it hones in on not the fact the they are homeless, but the fact that they are together and they have each other. This book is more dense and complex than the other books I have chose and really speaks to more abstract life experiences.

This book would be more suitable for 5th-6th graders. It contains text written in both English and Spanish and can be very interesting for students with Hispanic heritage. It also contains lists of recipes which is probably fairly new to elementary students and could be a little difficult for younger readers to understand. Nonetheless, the story brings the characters' stories together to explain a rather implicit meaning of the importance of family and community celebration.

Kurt Aldag
This is an interesting story that uses 5-10 lines of text per page. There is a mixture of simple and complex sentences as well as some challenging vocabulary. This would be a good book for upper elementary, 4th-6th grade, because of it's emphasis on text rather than illustrations. There are illustrations on each page but they are not necessary for understanding the text. The story talks about an unusual encounter in a small town which many young readers may not have experienced before. However, the students can still take implicit meaning away from reading this book.
