Q1: Which of the Ten Ethical Computing Guidelines do you think students violate most often?

I believe that many students violate computer ethics commandment #6: "Thou shalt not copy or use proprietary software for which you have not paid." This is because as students, many tend to find the "easy way out" and not pay for things online. This can include pirated books, movies, or songs. Students are more likely to violate this commandment because they want free items, but it is not fair for those who put effort into making these books, songs, or movies for us to enjoy. If many are violating this rule, it is more tempting for students to violate it because they may have pressure from their peers and think it is acceptable.

Q2: Why do you think these violations occur?

I think that there are many violations to computer ethics because it is easy to hide behind a screen and make mistakes. It can be harder to track down the face that is making these violations, and therefore more people are inclined to break the rules. Also, many might believe that they are less likely to face consequences for their actions that are made online. Another reason why ethical computer commandments are violated is because they might not think that it is a real problem. For example, in commandment #6, many think that no one is being harmed, so they may think it is appropriate for people pirate media online.

Q3: What do you think could be done to reduce or eliminate such unethical behavior?

One main thing that can be done to eliminate unethical behavior in the technology world is simply awareness and education on the ethical commandments. Oftentimes, people violate these rules without knowing it, and being educated on ethical rules can come a long way. They may think twice about their actions.

Another way to reduce unethical behavior is for organizations to advertise more about the consequences of breaking ethical rules in the computer world. Prior to this course, I didn't know ten commandments of ethical computing even existed, but now I know that it is extremely important to follow these rules. More awareness to the public about the digital footprint can also steer people away from breaking the rules when on their computers and they may be more mindful of others.
