I moved out to Arizona in June 2016 after my position as the Community Outreach and Marketing Coordinator ended at More Than Words, a nonprofit organization located in Waltham and Boston, Massachusetts. More Than Words helps teenagers ages sixteen through twenty one who are in foster care, court involved, homeless or out of school learn how to run an in store and online used book selling business as well as help them achieve their educational goals, whether that is graduating from high school and moving on to working full time, attending a job training program or going to a community college or four year college or university. My boyfriend Rich of now four and a half years had moved out to Arizona about a year or so prior to me in order to attend ASU for undergrad where he earned a business degree with a focus in supply chain back in May 2017. We wanted to finally put an end to the two years of long distance so as soon as my job ended back in 2016, I moved out from Massachusetts to be with him and to figure out what my next step would be career wise. Since moving to Arizona, starting in November 2016, I have been working as a teacher’s aide in a special education life skills class with Melissa Faubus at McClintock High School in Tempe. After working at McClintock for about a year and having had been out of school since May 2015, I decided that I wanted to pursue becoming a special education high school teacher and started the program through Rio Salado back in October 2017. It has been a stressful experience, but also rewarding. I am also anxious about not only completing the program through Rio Salado successfully, but also passing the Arizona certification exam and landing my first teaching job. However, I’m hoping that when the time comes, I’ll find the school that’s the right fit for me with supportive staff in order to teach my students successfully.
