I'll have a question posted at the beginning of the class. It doesn't have to be related to what we're learning. They get engaged in the chat and gets them "tuned in" rather than just jumping into the day's agenda. It has also helped me to get to know my students (maybe a bit too much on some questions lol).

I'm working with rhetorical analysis with my freshmen. They broke out into groups where they had to use the rhetorical devices we went over to persuade me to do something. They got to choose the something (with my approval of course). In their groups, they're coming up with a written persuasion. We are going analyze each piece of rhetoric and the strongest one will "win" in that I have to do that something. (Think of me come next Wednesday).

Small Talk Interviews/What Color do I give off?

I have used the small talk interview a few times this quarter just to help the scholars get to know one another a little better. Usually, I will drop them in a breakout room of 2-3 and just let them talk.
A few times, I have put some work and journaling along with this activity. The first time we did it, I had them introduce their partner. Another time, I had them use the color guide attached to describe their partners.
We always will do a take away at the end of these breakout room activities just to process through the knowledge we gained.

So when we transition into the work, I will move that slide back up and offer it to them if they need a break.
I also tell them to step away from the computer for a bit if needed, just get away from the screen for some time: grab a snack, run to the bathroom, get something to drink, etc.

1. Asked kids to rate their mood 1-10 or a color.
2. Read kids an excerpt from Thoreau's essay "Walking," dwelling on Thoreau's meaning of a "saunter."
3. Sent them off to walk outside (40's and sunny today).
4. Upon their return, asked them to assess their mood (everyone went u at least one level).
5. One student asked, "What is higher than a rainbow," so I showed them the viral video of the double rainbow guy.
6. They posted to a Jamboard: what they saw, felt/thought, or did on their walk. One kids made snow angels and another took her dog for a walk.
