I volunteer to help rasie the profile of Sporting Heritage CIC in Wales.

Outside of work I'm a big Wales football fan, with an interest in sporting heritage, links between sport and society, and fan cultures.

I couldn't find Wales-related podcasts...so started my own:

I've since started The Community Development Podcast (@CommDevtPodcast) and appeared on other people's podcasts (in English and Welsh) such as Desolation Radio, The Guardian, Radio Wales, Golwg, Radio Cymru, At The Game, independent radio.

They can be a great way of engaging people in your collections/archives

    e.g., Why do we award cups as trophies?
    Take a trophy from a museum collection and research its history for a podcast?

    Allows for bringing groups into the museum and facilitating (rather than directing) their attention across a variety of objects.

    Podcasts can be for an audience, but even better if they are from an audience: "community curation of content". Podcast Pêl-droed is a grassroots fan voice....but we're listened to by the 'hierarchy' and mainsteam media (see here).

    A strength of podcasts is how listeners can come to feel they are part of the family.

    Technical point: it's important to consider how and when your listeners 'consume' podcasts. On phones on the commute to work o in the gym? Or at work through a PC? This will inform where you host you content and how you share/promote it. This Rajar Audio Time survey has interesting data on podcast listening trends and demographics.

    Align, with other like-minded channels; collaborate; use each others' networks

    Link with you campaigns, exhibitions, events

    Twitter has been amazing for Podcast Pêl-droed:
    • Account managed by more than 1 person
    • Enables bilingual identity
    • Drives people to our podcast
    • Engage with fans on a 1-to-1. Make them feel part of the family. Familiarity is important to podcasts

    Facebook and Instagram can provide a complementary visual platform fo your audio platform. So consider your social media profile and interaction.

    Timetable of Wales games dictates a lot but we want to cover a lot of off-pitch things. So content to fill-in gaps without games

    Plan ahead

    Guests attract their following/networks (authors, journalists, fans' groups)

    Euro 2016 a considerable boost. People want to immerse themselves in success and positive, happy occasions (see also The Anfield Wrap here)

    Give people what they want. Respond to your download stats (not the same as listeners): do more of what is popular
