2. It says that Colin feels trapped and tied up. He feels he cannot escape his fate, escape the fate of him being a hunchback, though he can.

And I think that could not happen because strings are non living things and they can not move and let a person go.

In the sentence it is stating that the has a big tangle of knots and emotions in his brain trying to break free and show themselves to the free world and not be tangled and built up till they explode in Collin's head. When he is with Mary those knots go away they untangle and flee his head every second he is with Mary that is why he wants to hang out with her so much he misses those feeling of happiness and healthiness all the time and is very grateful for her and her company.
