Satire: B5 by Ashley Murphy

In what way did the SNL "Black Jeopardy" clip use satire to grab the audience's attention?
(Satire is used in many works of literature to show foolishness or vice in humans, organizations, or even governments - it uses sarcasm, ridicule, or irony.)

The SNL clip “black jeopardy” utilized satire in order to grab the audience’s attention through exposing its audience to something that can be considered “outrageous” or “relatable” through the identifiable media outlet “Jeopardy” and including something that could be immediately identified and related with. In this case, the identifying factor used was “Black people” and “A redneck playing Jeopardy with a group of African Americans.” This was a source of irony because rednecks are famous racists and playing jeopardy is an average thing people see all the time, creating immediate discomfort with the audience and causing them to laugh. Other ironic events were the redneck holding opinions that African Americans would stereotypically believe as well, for example believing the elections are rigged and that the Illuminati decides everything. This created comedy because it makes the audience go “haha that’s relatable” or “yea people are like that” and we laugh at it because that’s what our instincts tell us to do when we are placed in an uncomfortable situation or are placed in a situation where we should be in panic because human evolution sort of kept that reflex in our DNA. We call this product of human reflex and discomfort “humor” and it is exploited in this setting on television through the art of “satire” for the sake of generating currency to be spent for items in our society through the process of “capitalism.”
