Before reading this book, I have never encountered such a sad and devisating store or genre of books. This book made me cry so much and feel a lot of pain for the character. Til this day, one of my favoorite books I have ever read.

What's different about this book was the personal and cultural connection I had with the store and characters. I could definitly say that this book began my love for cultural / Hispanic genre of books and authors, as well as autobiography novels (including A Child Called It).

From 6th to early middle school I stopped reading, nothing interested me at the time and we were required to read books for credit but I remember not even pay attention to the books. Instead I cam aross this website that had stories, wether they were murder, horror, tragic, romantic, I found myself enjoying them. These weren't publish nor writen by professsionals, these were young teen girls writing stories and I enjoyed it. Funny I know. I even stayed up in the middle of the night just to finish my chapter or the whole story.

Going into high school I had previously applied to a college prep program called PUENTE and I got accepted. This program became a huge part my life and academic life. The academic portion of the program pushes us to read more, we would read propably around 6 books a year and the books were from authors who were POC. This program opened my mind to more books and authors but also fed into my interest of autobiographies. I loved the cultural aspect of the program and the books we read.
*The rest of the timeline are about my favorite books I read in PUENTE*

I actually kept up with the reading and got invested in Lennie and Goerge and how different they were as people. I definitly was shocked and sadend by the ending. :(

Getting into my sophomore year, we began our first semester (i think it was) reading this book. What my PUENTE teacher did for each of his sophomore puente classes he could makes us recreate The Lord of The Flies.
We pciked our own clans and we would spend the whole semester reading the book, taking group tests, doing weekly challenges, even had a rap battle all throughout the course of a semester. Defently a great time. We had challenges that duplicated each chapter and what the charcaters had to do. Ex. one of our challenges was to create our own tent made of pure magazines, blue tape, and skinny wodden sticks. We had to fit as many people from our clan into the tent and it had to sustain rain (it was actually rice).
