If one thing is true in the realm of education--its that we ALL make mistakes. Apologizing genuinely is an incredible skill to have and shows that you, as a collaborator, understand your co-educators and helps keep relationships intact and strong for collaboration.

10 Tips for Problem Solving for School Collaborations as written by Ann Knackendoffel

1. Have data, relevant materials, and thoughts organized before consultations, and develop a list of questions that will help ferret out the real problem.
2. Develop a checklist of information typically needed. Do not be reluctant to say that you do not have the answer(s). If it is something you should know, find out as soon as possible and get back to the person who asked.
3. Have strategies and materials in mind that may be helpful to the situation, but do not try to have all of the answers or offer solutions too readily because this discourages involvement by others who may have been struggling with the situation for some time.
4. Avoid jargon, and shun suggestions that conflict with school policies or favored practices of individual teachers; whenever possible use the terms “we” and “us,” not “I” and “you.”
5. Make it a habit to look for something positive about the teacher, the class(es), and the student, and comment encouragingly on those things by providing positive feed- back, not just negative perspectives.
6. Don’t try to “fix it” if it is not “broken,” or wait for the consultee to make the first move, or expect that teachers will be enthused and flattered to field questions about their classrooms and teaching methods.
7. When school co-educators or home co-educators seek advice about a student, first ask what they already have observed. This gets them involved and encourages their ownership in the situation, along with providing more information that can be helpful.
8. Know how to interpret test results and how to discuss those results clearly with other participants in the conference setting; if insecure about it, have a practice session with a supportive colleague.
9. When possible, provide family members with samples of the student’s schoolwork to discuss during the conference, remembering to refrain from talking while they are perusing the materials. Have a list of resources ready to share for helping with home- work, suggesting incentives and reinforcements, and providing study tips.
10. Maintain contact with teachers during the year. The collaborating teacher or family may have detected an improvement that is directly related to your work, and it will be uplifting and energizing for you to know that!
