The lives of approximately 62,000 Jewish people were saved by Carl Lutz after he issued safe-conduct documents enabling numerous Jewish families to emigrate, deeming him a hero during the Holocaust. Carl Lutz was born on March 30, 1895, and was a Swiss diplomat credited for his role in the resistance during the Holocaust. Defined as a sponsored persecution and mass murder of approximately six million people including European Jews, Romani people, the intellectually disabled, political dissidents, and homosexuals by the German Nazi regime, the Holocaust spanned from 1933 to 1945. Broken down in translation the Holocaust means whole (Holos) burned (kaustos). Through examining the context of resistance during the Holocaust, and the story of Carl Lutz, the impact of their actions, demonstrates the courageous defiance of individuals and groups against the cruelty of the Nazi regime, therefore highlighting the significance of resistance in preserving human dignity, promoting justice, and commemorating the memory of Holocaust victims.

Resistance is defined as an act or power of opposing, or withstanding. Many groups resisted Nazism including the Jews, despite the repercussions and punishment if they were caught. Seen as a mass genocide the resistance believed there was not a need to be killed or be under Hitler’s control. When the Nazis took over Budapest and sent people to concentration camps in 1944, Carl Lutz negotiated a special deal with the Hungarian government and the Nazis to send 8,000 protection letters about immigration to Palestine. Despite the threat of being caught and put into concentration camps the resisters persisted in their mission. Carl Lutz was not under any direct threat due to his prior agreement with the government and the Nazis. He did however go on to break this agreement. He was allowed to send 8,000 letters to each individual but instead, he sent a letter to each family allowing a greater outreach of the letters. Although their life was on the line, they put the needs of others before theirs and changed history forever.

Carl Lutz courageously saved the lives of tens of thousands of Jews in Budapest and Hungarian citizens persecuted as Jews. His works inspired many others to do similar work to save the Jews. His actions today are now considered the greatest rescue efforts by a resister for the Jews during the Holocaust. He was granted the chance and nominated three times for the Nobel Peace Prize and in 2014 was honored with the President’s Medal. He also has an award named after him called the Lutz Humanitarian Award. The importance of the resisters is greatly appreciated by everyone around the world especially the Jews as they learned that one small action can lead to a large change and lives saved. It also is an example of the importance of being proactive in bringing change in both little and big events. This courageous man saved a great number of Jews and is now recognized as one of the greatest if not the greatest resister during the Holocaust.
