Men, although are viewed by society as the strong cornerstone’s of their wives lives, are not as strong as they appear. In both texts it is referred to that men do not address the needs of women. When faced with emotional issues that their wives are experiencing, or even difficult situations that they are facing, men avoid helping. They do not know how to handle another person’s hurting. For example, even though Mr. Pontellier recognizes Edna’s troubles, he does nothing to help her.

According to Stanton and Chopin’s depiction of a mother, they are typically viewed as being weak and constantly protected from life by her husband. For a mother, their soul purpose in life is dedicated to looking after their children and worshiping their husbands, in doing so they are subsequently viewed in an angelic light. Stanton and character Edna, created by Chopin, both challenge the societal expectation of the role of a mother.
