The reason is because Hitler wanted control of Caucasus oil fields. Eventually the German troops were surrounded by the Soviet army and surrendered because of starvation and sickness. Due to the sky being cloudy, Americans could not attack from the air and the cold weather didn't help either. As the US forces pressed on despite the conditions and attacks from the enemy, American air forces finally attacked when the sky cleared. Stalin was reluctant to this but wasn't pressured by the other two because of the land occupied by the Soviet Union as well as it's vast army size. Roosevelt wanted the help of Stalin to fight Japan. This is significant because when Germany is divided into different pieces of land, it divided itself. It was West and East Germany, mostly due to the differences of the Soviet Union and the other two countries (America and Britain).

Shortly after when Japan officials were discussing their next course of action, the Soviet Union declared war on them. The US had also launched the next atomic bomb on Nagasaki. The Emperor finally decided to surrender, marking the end of the war. This is significant because the bombs ended the war but it also changed the way people thought about war. As some had blamed it on Hitler as he ordered some of the crimes, they were still prosecuted. Two routes for the Nazis included being hanged, and some were sent to prison for a very long time. This is significant because there were so many who committed the crimes of mistreating war prisoners. Some were even convicted from japan, China, Korea, and Southeast Asia.
