Seen Trait: Savior
Florian is one of my favorite characters in Salt to the Sea, and he reminds me of Dallas Winston in The Outsiders because he doesn't want to be perceived as someone who is concerned about anyone except himself. However, Emilia, the most observant of our four narrators, is quick to recognize his courage and to identify him as a knight. "For me, he was a conqueror, a sleeping knight, like in the stories Mama used to tell....If Poland was in distress, the knights would awaken and come to the rescue"(Sepetys 17). I think Florian rescues Emilia because she reminds him of his sister.
Unseen Trait: Deception
Florian hasn't told us what he's hiding, but he has a secret that he wishes to conceal from everyone else. Conversation is a risk he's not willing to take.

Seen Trait: My seen trait for Florian is brave, or caring even though he doesn't want to be perceived as that. I chose caring because of mainly the scene when he helped Emilia and saved her from getting raped. Emilia also refers to Florian as her knight. I think Florian looks to Emilia as if she is his sister and he cares for her as if that's true.
Unseen Trait: My unseen trait for Florian is deceptive or hiding, suspicious. I chose these because Florian is hiding something from us and we don't know what. He doesn't want anyone to see in his bag but the shoemaker knows something because of his shoes.

Emilia is very observant but still refers to herself as one who has many secrets. As we read Emilia's chapters her past unravels. Telling us about her father. I noticed how she observes and can tell many things about the travelers that many can't. She also is close to nature. She dreams many dreams and is very hopeful.

Seen Trait: I seen I can see from Joana is that she's a brave woman. Even though she's is in a lot of risk of helping others. I also think that Joana is a very independent person too. She wants to do and solve everything by herself but she also is a big helper. Since she is a nurse. Joana wants to help everyone she sees because after she killed someone. She thinks to try to keep that covered up. She will try to help anyone she can see.
Unseen Trait: One thing that you don't see from Joana is fear. Even though she seems like a brave person. She does have fear after murdering somebody. But Joana doesn't show that. I think she became a nurse to keep her mind off of fear by helping others.

I think that Emilia is timid because she is very quiet and she keeps to herself a lot. I also think that she has a lot of fear not just from the Russians but from what might lie ahead of her.

I think that even though Emilia is quiet, she holds so much courage and bravery. She is obviously hunted by her past, I think that she is already brave enough to follow Florian even when he told her to go away. She is also brave by being accepted by people who could have turned her in to be killed. I think that she posses the courage to do the right thing in the end even if it means sacrificing herself.

Seen Trait: Fear/Helper
The character that I am fallowing is Florian, and I picked him because I really like his character and what I seen in him is fear and a helper and why I picked fear for one of the traits is because he has lot of fear that he is hiding and not letting the fear out, and he does not want to talk to anyone and he stores it up and does not let go. The golden line that I think shows the fear in him is-
“It would be warmer if I sat near the fire with the others but couldn’t risk it. No conversations.”
So why I picked that line is because he wants to go and sit with the others so he does not die of freezing to death but like he said he in his mind he does not want to risk it and does not want to say anything to anyone. Why I also picked helper is he helps Emilia with the Russian man and kills him before the man could harm Emilia and why I think that helper goes well with that scene is she is like his sister to him and he has some feelings for her and helps her through that time when the gun is to her neck with the Russian man.

You can tell that he is hiding something but I picked this because Florian does not want risk it by telling what he is hiding.

My Character: Joanna.
My Rationale: I choose Joanna because I think she is a really cool complex character. I think that honestly she will survive the longest because she is smart, pretty, and skilled. I think that she is a really good nurse and is self sufficient and dependent on no one. She doesn't focus on the pain of her path, but rather the hope of her future and she is a very positive person with tons of trust.
Seen: She is a very brave motivated, hopeful person. Joanna is a very skilled nurse and is prepared for the worst. She is also very compassionate. You know this because instead of saving herself, she always chooses to help other people to the best of her ability and beyond.
Unseen:I think fear is something Joanna can battle with. This is because her past haunts her. She doesn't let anything show or get to her, but deep down is is determined by something to do this. Guilt.
My Golden Line: "Guilt is a hunter..... It's all your fault. The voice whispered." (SEPETYS 1)
P.S. I really like this book and think it is very interesting. It is also cool how they use the perspective of different people to tell the story because I know it is important to include many perspectives because it spices up the story, making it more intense, and can connect with more readers as it finds common ground.
Also, maybe my character is guilty that she feels she hasn't saved enough people.

Joana is a nurse and loves to help people out in need. She helps Florian out with his shrapnel wound and theirs a connection between them. She freely helps him and she does her best job. She gives everyone her best. She is basically the leader of the group and all of them know it. She knows what to do and makes quick good decisions.
Unseen: Guilt
She claims she is a murder and she is followed around by guilt by killing someone. She feels terrible and very guilty but she doesn't let people see that. She lets everyone see the leader and helper side of her, not the guilt.

Seen Trait: Damsel in Distress
In the very early pages of the book, we see her being rescued by Florian. I think that after being saved by him she may begin to fall for him. A typical Damsel in Distress story. Though, I don't think that Florian will fall for her.
Unseen Trait: Wise
Though Shame is her hunter, I believe that she is very wise. She may not have been in her past times but I believe that she will be a very important asset to the group.

Seen: Smart- I think that Joana is smart because she knows what she is doing. She also doesn't believe/trust everyone either, she tries to figure things out. Like with Florian. She knows something is wrong with him even when he says he is fine. She tries to figure things out like what's going on with Florian and Emilia and she doesn't give up easily. She also tries to come up with ways to keep everyone safe, especially the little boy traveling with them.

Unseen: Worried- I think that Joana is worried because she sees the dead people along the road and knows the horrible things that are happening to people. She is also worried because they are running out of medical supplies and food and those are things that they need to survive. Everyday more people are dying and it gets harder to move on without all the supplies that they need but don't have. She is the only one who really knows how to take care of people professionally and that is hard because there are so many people who are hurt and sometimes they have to keep going even if they are hurt which threatens their health a lot. She also has to deal with all the different opinions of the people she is with and has to keep the peace.

Seen Trait: A trait that I see is that she is very empathetic and caring. I feel like she is extra caring to others because of what her greatest crime was. Murder. I feel like becoming a nurse to help people is her way to try and make up for what she had done in the past. She clearly is very empathetic because some of the people in her group that she is traveling with, specifically Eva, want to leave Florian and Emilia behind, but she doesn't want to. She feels badly for them and thinks they deserve a chance.
Unseen Trait: An unseen trait that I noticed is that there is something that is haunting her. We are not clear what it is right now, but there is defiantly something that is bothering her. Also, this phrase keeps repeating "It's all your fault." She is getting blamed for something, and it bothers her. I think that she feels like it is out of her control and that is another thing she is running from.

I get the sense that Emilia is very scared and alone. She keeps following Florian because she want somebody to be with. After all the hard she has gone through, she needs someone that will protect her and that is what Florian did for her.

I think that even though Emilia is lonely and scared, she has a lot of bravery for going on the journey with Florian even in her situation. She has been through a lot in her past with men, but she is not scared of Florian and she is couragous and stays with him because she thinks that he can take care of her.

I chose this trait because she is so incredibly brave to go out and help people. when she sees emilia she was very uneasy because she was polish and she didn't really know what to do. but as Joana she knew exactly what to do to keep her calm. I can also see that she has a deep respect for people and their lives. she doesn't want to interfere with them but she needs to help them so she has to know some stuff about them.

I think joana is very fearful for what is going to happen everyday. she doesn't know if she will live the next day or if she will even get food so I thin she is fearful about what the war will do to her and innocent people. she also does a very good job hiding this because she is always worrying about others and never herself so that may be just to get her mind off of what is going on in the war. I also think that she is scared for the kids lives and how they are impacted by the war. the kids that get injured like emilia are very scared and don't know what to do with themselves so they go to Joana but she really doesn't truly know what to do with them either. when emilia and florian came in she said "the arrival of the german and the girl made me uneasy" (Sepetys 28) this showed me that she was unsure of what to do with them and if they were maybe spies. so I think that she was just very fearful of what would happen to her and the others if she didn't know what to do with them.

The seen trait I have for Florian is brave because he isn't really afraid of anything. He will do anything to save other lives before him at anytime. In one of the first scenes Florian saves Emily from getting raped and she really thinks high of Florian because he saved her from getting raped. I think that Florian would do anything for Emily just because he is so Brave.
Unseen Trait: Trustworthiness towards himself
Florian really trusts just himself but he can keep whatever it is that he doesn't want people to know he will keep it a secret. Florian will not let anyone touch his pack and this shows if someone was giving him millions of dollars he still wouldn't give it up because it holds so much. If someone were to tell him a secret he wouldn't tell anyone just like his pack he wouldn't let someone know about the secret.

Seen: I feel like a seen trait of Emilia is that she is hesitant. Ever since the cave incident, she doesn't want to talk to people that much because she is scared. If she does say something, she thinks about it a lot before she says it.
Unseen: I think an unseen trait of Emilia is love. I'm not sure if that is considered a trait but that's ok. I think she wants to show her love to a lot of people especially Florian, but she is very nervous and doesn't want to get hurt again.

Towards him but also from him. She was just saved and I think that they really connected in that moment.

Seen Trait: Alfred is seen by everyone around him as a coward. He is always hiding in closets, or trying to get out of doing his job.

Unseen Trait: Though people around him don't know about it, Alfred is extremly prideful. In his mental letters home, he talks about doing amazing things, how he's always about to be rewarded a premotion, where in reality, he is probably one of the last ones that would be premoted.

Seen Trait: A trait that I see in Joanna is Fear. She is always running from her past to find it's still there always plaguing her. i feel that fear is what motivated her to be a nurse. But in the book it says she lost her lover he left her and that is another whole in her heart that hasn't been filled just like murder she feels like it was all her fault and that is something that hasn't left her ever since she started carrying that burden. She hides all her pain from everyone else but Ingrid senses the ache in her heart. She hides her fear very well to she acts like she isn't afraid and that is very strong and nothing bothers her but deep down she is a scared young girl that doesn't know what to do.

Seen trait: Bravery. I think that Florian is a brave, fearless, and courageous character. The book starts off by him rescuing Emilia. Instead of being a coward he rescues here and then she refers to him as night. We know Florian has a lot of power and he extremely brave with it and he doesn't let anyone scare him. Seen Traits: A seen trait that Joana gives right off the bat, is that she is a medic, and cares for everyone. She wants the best for all the refuges. She will do anything to keep people alive. I think I have a answer for why she wants to take care of people, its because she has said she has killed someone. Which is why she wants to try and cover up what she has done, by doing the exact opposite on what she has done. Another trait she has is that she is extremely observant, she almost like a detective. When she looked at Florian's wound she immediate knew what he did to try and treat it, and she knew what had caused the hole in him.

Seen Trait: A seen trait in Emilia is secrecy. She has many secrets she hides from the others in the group. For example she has told no one of her life back home. She has told know one of her parents and other family. She wonders in the book if she should tell Joana her secret.
Unseen Trait: An unseen trait that Emilia has is a fear of people leaving her. She has no family traveling with her so she has no one to stay by her side. Until Florian (the knight as Emilia calls him) comes and rescues her from the soldier. But already right after that she mentions that she is giong to leave him. "He wanted to leave me.
