Stencil experiment

Before the experiment, I asked people, "what feelings you can feel when looking orange, and why". Most of people answered it feels 'dynamic', 'joyful' or 'passionate' because of the colour orange. In this experiment, I wanted to express the feelings of orange by using only monochromatic colours.

The design below is the feelings that orange gives to me. Those dynamic motion of orange or passionate motion of orange outside of the peel is the examples.

1. erase background image
2. filter (with fewer number of colours and simplify the shape)

1. trace on the transparent paper: separate layers into 2, black and white
2. cut using design knife
3. print white layer and dry

techniques developed:
- pressures and blending
- scratch using different materials (ex. clips)
- highlight, shadow by adding white or black
- mixing with different colours

printed on different papers using sponge roller

- brown paper: most complicated to print 2 layers. In the beginning, I selected this paper to appear the colour (especially the white) than printing on other papers. But, this brown paper was too thin to print print all 2 layers.
- transparent paper: was little bit limp for the print, but it was better than using the brown paper.
- transparent paper (film): most advantageous material because the film paper was strong to the moist (the paint) so the paper did not limped or ripped. Also, the background is transparent so It shows both whites and blacks on appropriate background behind it.

In his painting, , the Dandelions are portrayed pragmatically by using pastel. For the examples of realism in the painting, there are no artificiality by the artist, and representing the real dandelion as it is.

In my personal observation of the painting, 'Dandelions' of Millet was impressive because I thought pastels are complicated medium to paint detailed, elaborated paintings as a real photo. However, In the Millet's painting, the dandelion and other plants are expressed as realistically as looking a photo. Also, I had not much experience of using oil pastel as an main medium of painting, so in this experiment, I wanted to challenge using oil pastels for paining.

* used plastic roller
In the first printing, I tried to print first white layer of the stencil on the brown slim paper. But the roller is mostly for printing on flat materials, so the paint did not go into the detailed points while printing. The final outcome (all white and black has printed) also did not came well. This experience gave me failure and improvements to me that sponge roller is better way to print the thing(?) using stencil. Furthermore, I thought selecting material is also an important process while creating an artwork.

- the strength and limitation that the material impacts to the final artwork: the film paper was useful for many ways. ex. overlapping on the photograph
- stencil art and makes more simple artwork so it can focus the attention to the message of the artwork--dynamics

Exhibition Text

Title:

Medium: Mixed media, oil on canvas

Size: 30x30cm

Intention: Our body has circulatory system with an artery that air flows from the lungs to the body, and a vein with opposite direction.Those are all necessary organ for us to live, hence we cannot judge the function of heart is good or bad.

This is same as a cycle of our emotions. Various feelings are coexisting in our inside, and we cannot say as happiness is good, and depression is bad. All the emotions are essential to us, and we will better to accept our feeling as the heart.

Title:

Medium: Mixed media (cut paper and light )

Everyone has a variety of emotions. Regardless of age, gender and appearance. However, they may not be aware of their feeling or try to hide their emotion. But that feeling comes naturally through changes in our body temperature. This work shows people's hidden emotions, and it carries the message that people should be able to be confident in their feelings.

With the concept of emotion, I worked for two studio pieces in this session. Two topics that I focused on is "accepting emotion" and "hidden emotion" . Of course I have tried to improve my technical skills using oil painting, paper cutting and creating video, I've learned more things from the investigation of the concept. As two concepts are all related to finding my emotion, I needed to think of what I am feeling or thinking of first.

Orientalism that looks awkward to asians

Orientalism is the trend of Eastern tastes and styles that arose in the West with the start of trade between the West and the East. Originally, orientalism was the symbolism of the mysterious image from the west. However, orientalism includes only a view from the western people.

The book , written by Edward Said is criticizing the distortion created by west. In the world historical view, orientalism is one of the method that western people to justify colonies especially during the world war. Also, orientalsim is a standard that dividing the weak and strong.

In the Lim Kim's artwork, she is showing how non-Asian people are viewing the Asians. People who are represented by a mixture of cultures of India, China, Japan and Korea look at it and worship it as "Orientalism." However, for real Asians, it is only awkward to see their own culture, which has been mixed without boundaries, and to put down the whole Asian culture to a single word.

Artistic Intention:
We often divide the world into two parts: the East and the West. The different world that one group looks at is new and one can yearn for its culture and appearance. The view of Asians from the West is called Orientalism, which has been distorted and cultivated for decades is used as a means to justify misdeeds such as a colonial rule. Furthermore, the human rights of Asians, especially the East Asian women are continuing to fall.

The East, described only as "mystery," is including many countries' culture and identity itself that cannot be explained in one word. All of us should understand and respect each other's culture more than sticking several countries into one word. Also, it is important to know that it is another form of discrimination to trap different people in words.

* I inserted high quality images for those artworks but the image quality has decreased during the export. So I want you to know how to export it with original image size after the school opens.

Question: I am little confused about 'impact to audience' for criteria B. Does it need to be the direct impact?, if so, how can I find those?
For example, the Rouen Cathedral series has shown the change of mood by natural light, but I don't understand what impact did audience got...

art making form: paper cutting+ acrylic painting+ (undecided)

- paper cutting of body part: represents the identity of asian women hidden by others (it means that the only a silhouette has been left)
- acrylic painting: let audience know that the body parts are asian woman's. For example, put asian ring, hair pin or shoes with colours. (it contrasts with the paper cutting that only a monochromatic colours)
- something to hide the body part cut: It represents
--> the medium can be:
1. mosaic
2. poured paint or epoxy (the colour did not appeared apparently according to the experiment)
3. small size cut mirrors (about 3*3cm and stick it on the artwork as tile)

Country boundary divided by colonization

Some countries had been colonized by European country and Japan during the World Wars. Those Colognes had been exploited physically and economically, but they also divided the boundary of country by themselves to make it easier to colonize. Those country includes many African countries, America, and Korea.

Especially, Korea had an 38th parallel north that divides north and south (not a boundary of now). The line was divided by America and Soviet Union while Korea did not decided, and had a conflict each other.

In specific point of view, some people interpret that the Korean peninsula had been 'used' to enlarge the power of each socialism and democracy. Hence, those arbitrary line allowed Koreans to Korean war.

This occasion is applicable for more situation such as Africa.
