I tnink that Joseph was referring to the idea of angles because he heard Reverend Ballou talk about how angels helped Mary and Joseph.This is referring to that Joseph had given up on the idea that someone is caring for him. But after Reverend Ballou talks to Joseph he notices that not everything is as bad as it was on Stone Mountain and his "angles" Jacks familly are the ones who care for him.

On chrismas jacks father took joeseph to a comunity work for chrismas after it ended joseph talk to a pastor about the angels and the mary storie thats when joseph realize that jacks family are angeles for joseph they take him out of bad situations , but he got mad at acualy angels because he thought where were they all his life.

i think that joseph was referring to when he talks about the angels is: That he has had many bad things happen to him in his life, and that is why he questions if angels really help when the man at the first congregational says that they are meant to help you. The pastor tells the story of how angels protect Joseph and Mary throw the hole pregnancy, this made Joseph say that where were the angels during his life and the birth of Jupiter. This is an important moment for Joseph because he starts to open up with the pastor which is very weird for him to do. Also when they were all opening presents the gift that Joseph got the most excited for was underneath an angel. After that he hug Jack's mom and then Jack's dad touches Joseph's back and he did not flinch, this may mean that maybe the angels are with him now and the angels may be Jack's family.

I think that Joseph was referring to Joseph and Mary's story in his discussion with Reverend Ballou. Because the story tells about how angels protected them. And Joseph thinks that if angels were supposed to help people why did they not protected him when he was with Madeline.

There is this meaningful part where Jack's parents give Joseph some Christmas presents. He opened some gifts with Jack , the usual: socks, boots, sweaters, etc. However, Joseph got a more meaningful gift. There was an envelope under Joseph's angel in the Christmas Tree. It seemed a big deal (the reader couldn't tell what it was, neither did Jack.) He felt so automatically cheerful, he even went for Jack's mom and gave her a hug. They hugged, Jack's dad gave him a pat in the back. He seemed to be alright when he did that.

I can connect this to the "Angel" situation with the reverent. Joseph has been through a harsh life. He lived a happy life with Maddie, but then she got pregnant. Her parents found out, so did Joseph's dad, eventually community service, etc. Maybe when he lived a happy life and then met the Reverent, he would've believed in Angels. But now, Maddie's situation, Jupiter's adoption, and now he has trouble with school (the safe space he should've been on) is now contaminated with bullies. He has no faith beacause he believes he has no support in spirituality.

When Jack's parents take them to christmas eve service, Joseph asks the pastor about the angels and he says that they have always been there with Joseph and Mary bu then Joseph asks why did they not save them from bad. I think that when Joseph refers to the angels he is taking maybe about how they didn't avoid Joseph and Mary from bad situations. I think he realizes that Jack and his family are his angels because they try to keep him away from bad situations but also stood with him in bad situations such as how Jack fought with the 8th graders to help Joseph.

I believe that this moment was important because the story of baby Jesus is similar to what happen to Maddie and Joseph. I think that Joseph refer to where the angels where because on the story there where angels protecting Mary and Joseph. On the life of Maddie and Joseph there was no one helping them or someone saying them that everything was going to be okey. I also think that when Jack's parents gave to Joseph their own angel this could mean that they will be there to help him to support him on his destinos. I also believe that Joseph now knows that he has two angels looking to him.

I would say that this specific moment was really important to Joseph since not only was it due to the fact the Jack and his family took Joseph to the memorial service but that they stayed to let Joseph talk and reflect about what he heard. This moment was extremely important to Joseph because he started to doubt of why the angels were always supporting Joseph and Mary through out some hard times that they suffered but when he needed any type of help when Maddie and Jupiter were alone and scared. Therefore I would have to say that this moment was really important to Joseph since he had someone to talk to about what he really though and what he felt which is why this could eventually lead to Joseph achieving more character development and becoming more open and aware of his lives situation.

The moment when Joseph had a discussion with Reverend Ballou was important for Joseph because the Pastor Ballou talked to Joseph about Joseph and Marie´s story and tells how the angels protects them throughout pregnancy. Reverend Ballou said that angels were there allways sepecially during hard times, but Joseph disagreed because he remembers maddies death and Jupiter´s birth, and when he was in the Juvenile facility with no one. And that made him feel so alone.

I think that this is important for Joseph because the angels where a symbol of hope, but Joseph has not feel hopeful lately. Even he now has a family that is more caring and he has Jack, he feels lonely and angry towards the universe. His life has not be perfect and he feels as if the universe just hates him. Also he talks about protection and angels being always there for you, so he probably feels that Maddie turn into an angel and that she is still by his side, so his feeling of loneliness is compressed a little. He is still mad at the universe for taking away Maddie, because she was a nice girl that deserved to live. The fact that he don't believe in angels is also a symbol that hope is not present on his life and that he is a person that looks at the glass half empty.

On christmas, jacks parents took Joseph to a christmas service. Later on Joseph talked to the pastor about angels and Joseph was very mad , he said that angels weren’t there when he was going through a tough time.

Jack's parents took Jack and Joseph to a Christmas Eve service where Joseph met Reverend Ballou. And Reverend Ballou teaches Joseph and tells him of the story of Mary and Joseph, and how Joseph and Mary were unsure about what they were going to do, but an angel came to help them believe in God and go through that hard time. Reverend Ballou also said that angels help people through hard times. When Joseph disagreed he got very angry and talked about how angels were never in his life, Joseph also talks about how he was very alone going through the hard times in his life.

After the service, Joseph talked to the pastor about Joseph and Mary's story, which tells about how angels protected them throughout the pregnancy. The pastor told him that angels show up all the time, especially during hard times. Joseph disagrees very violently. I think his disagreeing goes back to Maddie's death and Jupiter's birth, when he was stuck in the juvenile facility with no one exceot Mrs. Stroud, and he felt so alone. He experienced those heartbreaking news alone, and he couldn't do anything about the news; he was stuck in the facility. Feeling alone like that makes you lose faith. That's what he was referring to.

When Joseph and Reverend Ballou had their talk on Christmas Eve it was important to Joseph because he heard the story about Joseph and Mary and he wondered why angles had not come to help him and Maddie. When Jackˋs family gave him an angel of his own to put on the tree I think that Joseph felt like he was kind of part of the family and I thought that was really beautiful.

First of all, I think that Joseph's question was caused by several things. The first thing I can think of is that Jack's parents gave Joseph his own Angel on the tree. Then, we can see angels in the Reverend Ballou's story about the birth of Jesus. In the Reverend's story angels come to help Joseph and Mary, they reassure them that God has good intentions. This is all the backstory to when Joseph asked if the Reverend's story is true. The thing that seems to concern Joseph is the angels. I believe that he is really upset that if angels actually do exist and if he had his own (which we can kind of see that he has one at the tree, which may mean that he has one metaphorically) then why wouldn't his angel help him. His question is actually a good question and is not formulated to attack the Reverend. However, it comes from a place of anger because he was in a fight where he was greatly injured and there wasn't anybody to help him but Jack, but Joseph didn't want Jack to be involved because he would get in trouble. It also comes down to his troubled life, he has suffered a lot of things that are not positive at all and it has been a bad event followed by an even worse event. This makes him question his faith on the whole God and angels aspect because they don't seem very present in his life (since he has had so many incidents happen to him). On another note, I think that the Reverend handled Joseph's question really well, he knew the right things to say, and I think that will really help Joseph in the future. Maybe later down the book something related to a miracle or god or angels will help Joseph find Jupiter or accomplish something big.

Reflection
Both Jack and Joseph go on Christmas Eve to a place where ther is a pastor and Jack talks with him. The pastor says how angels protect every person in their good and bad times to help them be better. Jack is very mad with what the pastor said because he never felt when the angels helped him. It is like if the Angels left him.

The pastor says as all the angels have protected you and he answers "where the hell have they been, where were they when I needed them the most". he is frustrated and lost faith, and has no hope in things getting better.

in my opinion when joseph is talking abou the angels, i think he means about the christmas service because its about angels that how angels were important and how they could protect a lot,everything about the pastor that has a lot to do with angels.but thaey started having discusion maria and joseph and they say its not the right thing so they say no angel help maddie so it was very frustrated for joseph and he like doesent trust angels because joseph passed many hard moments.

I think that this part of the story is really important and it is trying to tell us something. They are 2 things: one is that when Jack's parents gave Joseph his own angel for the tree. Also when they went to the Christamas service, it was the first time Joseph went and he started to ask the pastor about the angels and how they are protecting you. But that let Joseph thinking because he has passed through a lot of stuff, and where were the angels? Why didn't he had their protection? This is the part were Joseph starts doubting about his faith and gets kind of bad because he didn't had that protection.
