"
•The type of imagery that is used is visual and tactile
•The imagery shows that the Chinese Workers' tongues are very rough which suggest that their language is very foul and uncouth. This also suggest that they are very rude as they use filthy words when they talk. The organ tongue is usually very soft but in this poem it is very rough, this suggest that Singaporeans are discriminating them because of their looks. The Chinese Workers' harsh words is sharp enough to break the silence of the train, this suggest that Singaporeans are discriminating them because of their volumes, they think that Chinese Workers are very rowdy and noisy all the time.
•This imagery emphasize how Singaporeans discriminate Chinese Workers because of their foul language they use all the time and that they cannot be quietened down as they are very loud and noisy all the time.
•Ryan Danial, Dylan Tay, Ilhan Raiyan,Ethan, mat

•Why is the word/phrase repeated?
• It is because it emphasises that “we”,the Singaporeans have been tolerating them for a very long time, and that “we” the Singaporeans are treating them too kindly to a point where “we” are frustrated and annoyed towards them and “we” think that they don’t even belong to our country.

•What does the use of these words/phrases suggests.
•This suggests that the Singaporeans were only thinking about themselves as they only use the phrase “we”. This shows that they did not think about what the Chinese Workers might feel being in a new environment and only thought about what that concerns them.

•So what does it emphasise about the Chinese Workers and/or the Singaporeans?
•It emphasises that the Chinese Workers were disliked by almost all of the Singaporeans, and that Singaporeans were starting to criticise, discriminating, showing hatred and also showing a sense of racism towards them. Not only that, the Singaporeans were mean and rude towards them one evidence is that they “censored” the Chinese Workers out which suggests that they wanted to blur them out to show their annoyance towards them
- Ashly,Putri,Ellysia 2-6

Diction

•Why is the word/phrase repeated?
The word, 'our', emphasises that the Singaporeans in the poem felt that the Chinese immigrants were inferior to them and treated them with little respect and acknowledgement. And when they did, they often insulted them. Thus, 'our' is a contrast to who of the two groups is being discriminated.

•What does the use of these words/phrase suggest
This suggests that being different from the locals meant discrimination against them. As the locals had much dislike for the immigrants just for being different in where they came from, how they spoke and etc. Despite having to speak the same mother tongue.

• So what does it emphasise about the Chinese workers and/or Singaporeans?

The Chinese workers' behavior is the same as the inner thoughts of Singaporeans. The poet emphasises how discriminatory the mindset of Singaporeans towards those Chinese workers. Although, the Chinese workers may have bad manners in the public but the Singaporeans have a negative thinking which is even worse. Even though they might not show their actual feelings, they are not even true to themselves which much more horrible as compared to the Chinese workers. The poem also emphasises that Singaporeans are not humble to those who are poor, they are extremely arrogant and think that they are the good ones such as being generous. However, in actual fact, they are not kind people and are even worse than the poor Chinese workers.

JiaYun, Zi Qian, Sufian, Andrea

The phrase “ they are an island in our sea “ is unusual because the Singaporeans or the locals are represented as the sea and the immigrants are represented as the island. The phrase uses words like our and they saying that the immigrants don’t belong in the Singaporean’s “sea” and that they cant live together because the word our is a strong word saying that they are not suppose to be here living among us .

This phrase suggest that the locals which is the Singaporean’s dont think that the immigrants should be here in their land and that they don’t think they should live together or be in the same space together as to the Singaporean’s the immigrants are lower than them and they are of a higher statues so they cant be together doing the same thing going the same way .

It emphasises that the Chinese workers are the less privileged and have to leave home to work inn hard labour jobs being tired Everyday and have people criticising them and the Singaporean’s have more privileged in getting a better job than them as they get to go to school and get to be with their family not like the immigrants. They also dont have to tolerate people thinking less of them

Rinnie , Jia Yu , Jia Ling , Arief

This sentence shows that the Chinese workers are "islands" in the "sea" of Singaporeans.
