Jane wants nothing more than to have undying love for someone and for that love to be reciprocated. She doesn't desire physical things. When Mr. Rochester tried to dress her in the finest dresses and Jewelry she said "Oh, sir!—never mind jewels! I don’t like to hear them spoken of. Jewels for Jane Eyre sounds unnatural and strange: I would rather not have them." Most women would have jumped at the chance to wear such fine jewelry. Instead, his love was enough for her.

In chapter 13 Rochester calls her a "fairy" because she is different than any other governess he's ever seen. He is very impressed with her piano playing skills and drawing skills. He dismissed the girls as her admires the drawings.

Jane has looked out for herself for almost all of her life so far. While she would love for someone to lean on an share her burdens with, she sees dependency almost as a weakness. After the wedding was stopped Jane wants to leave, saying "I care for myself. The more solitary, the more friendless, the more unsustained I am, the more I will respect myself." She uses this in an attempted pep talk in order to convince herself to leave Thornfield, ensuring her strength as an independent person.

Jane wants to express herself in any way possible, with the hopes that someone will listen. Growing up at Gateshead her input was always disregarded by her cousins, her aunt, and even the household maids. Giving her a deep desire for the world, or simply even a single person to hear what she has to say. She finally received this from Mr. Rochester. He is one of the only people to ever listen to Jane and treat her as an equal. He tells her so, saying "Come to my side, Jane, and let us explain and understand one another." Through this he gives her an invitation for what she wants, to be forever heard.

Ever since she was placed in the care of the Reed family, Jane has simply wanted to get away and have a fresh start. A place she could move to and all of her problems would be left in the past. When she was staying at Lowood she said "I would not now have exchanged Lowood with all its privations, for Gateshead and its daily luxuries." The only reason that she would rather stay there instead of the beautiful Gateshead estate is because she wants to move on with her life and start over again.

Jane was rejected many times as a child in the Reed household and at Lowood. After her parents died nobody wanted her, not even her aunt. Sadly, some of this rejection was due to her looks. Bessie Abbot said "if she were a nice, pretty child, one might compassionate her forlornness; but one really cannot care for such a little toad as that." This rejection hurt, which is why it took Jane so long to express her feelings to Mr. Rochester

After moving from place to places he found herself residing in Thornfield mansion, where she couldn't help but to become attached to her master and lover, Mr. Rochester. In chapter 23 she walked through the garden to admire the purple colors in the sky, "Where the sun had gone down in simple state--pure of the pomp of clouds spread a solemn purple", (pg 261) and to try to get away from Rochester for awhile. She then finds Rochester in the garden with her where they have a conversation on how beautiful a moth in the garden is.
