Essential Requirements

I will set forth a few important requirements that each student should adhere to during online classes. One essential rule is that their camera should always be switched on. This enhances the learning experience by creating a sense of being in a classroom together, enabling us to better communicate and understand each other. Furthermore, they're expected to maintain a clean and quiet background during classes. Not only does this ensure minimal distractions for students, but it also shows respect for your peers by creating a conducive learning environment for everyone.

Breakout Room

I'm planning to adopt the use of breakout rooms during my future online sessions. Breakout rooms provide a smaller, more intimate setting for discussions, facilitating increased participation, especially from those students who might feel overwhelmed in larger group dynamics. This feature can be particularly effective for group activities, brainstorming sessions, or collaborative problem-solving tasks. As an instructor in STEM, I believe implementing these rooms will help me create a more inclusive and dynamic learning environment and promote active participation from each student. This can also help shape student's skills of communication and presentation.

Polling

I'm intending to incorporate real-time polling into my online sessions. This tool will serve as a barometer, allowing me to gauge the pace of my teaching. It helps in identifying moments when I may need to speed up or slow down the lesson based on student understanding. Moreover, it's a practical way to assess whether additional background information is necessary for a topic to ensure all students are on the same page. By making learning more interactive and responsive, we can enhance comprehension and engagement.

Teach from the Office

Instead of hosting online sessions from my home study, as I have in the past, I will be transitioning to conducting these classes from my on-campus office. This change aims to set a more formal tone for my online classes. The feedback and observations I've gathered suggest that students tend to emulate the environment from which I instruct. The more formal setting of an office, compared to a home study, can encourage students to treat online sessions with the same seriousness and focus as they would an in-person class. By doing so, I hope to foster an atmosphere that motivates students to be more attentive and engaged.
