Your progress so far

This week I have learnt about Chinese food including vegetables, drinks, meat and fruits. I watched all materials given and answered some quizzes. I was so happy since I did well on quizzes. Not to forget, I also did some exercises to recall all the new phrases I have learnt throughout this week.

3. Your feelings and thoughts

I am pleased that I was able to get to know how to pronounce some food in Mandarin. Most of the food is all my favourite and some are on my bucket list to try. I can’t wait to try them on my own. Now that I can order them in mandarin is actually something that I really look forward to.

4. How did you learn and apply the skill of decision-making in your EP journey?

Throughout my Elective Posting journey, I have learned the skill of decision making especially when I encountered some difficulties during my classes. Whenever I felt like something is hard, I was able to decide how to overcome it by finding an alternative solution for each one of them. Not just that, choosing ‘Mandarin’ as a thing I wanted to commit is actually quite challenging at first. Plus some of my friends seem to be happy with their own choice. Somehow make me doubt my decision. But then I realized I have to do things on my own, so I decided to follow my passion instead of thinking of others.

5. How did you manage your time throughout this EP journey?

Doing an elective posting while at home was somewhat challenging for me since I was also busy with family matters. So, I managed my time by taking classes after I have completed house chores and using my me time to finish it. Sometimes, I went to the library. It also takes me around 1-hour to get ready and drive to the library. I think I have managed my time quite pretty good since everything was in control so far.

6. Your plan for next week (Week 4)

I will learn some new phrases about shopping including asking prices, bargaining and how to express our preferences.

1. Name: Nur Arina Amira Binti Harizal
Matric number: A173739
Date: 7/8/2022

2. Your progress so far
This week I have learnt on how to ask and introduce family members. I also learnt some vocabulary on family members and numbers 1-10. Comparing from my previous weeks, I think I am more capable on reading Hangul now as I have been exposed to a lot of Korean words. As usual, the learning involves videos, reading materials, and quizzes.

3. Your feelings and thoughts
Now that the syllabus of learning Korean language has leveled up, I am actually quite worried if I am not able to really get the hang of this. I realize that I am able to understand what the Korean speaker is saying, but when it comes to me speaking, it is quite confusing, especially when it comes to end some words because I have to consider if the words ends with vowels or consonants too and also many other things. However I could still understand the concept and I believe with enough practice, I can make it through.

4. How did you learn and apply the skill of decision-making in your EP journey?
I think, since the beginning of choosing this Elective Posting activity, it has taught me on skill of decision-making. I think that is the moment that has taught me the most on decision-making skill indeed. For a month, I have been wondering on what is exciting yet give benefits to me. I have been thinking to work part time or to do volunteering, yet I decide this online course is the one as I am eager to learn it so I can understand any Korean movies later. Now, I do not regret my decision and does find this course valuable for me.

5. How did you manage your time throughout this EP journey?
Firstly, doing elective posting during semester break seems reasonable as it would not interfere with my medicine study. Thus, for me, I think learning this course online does not really interfere with my home-schedule. I learn this course online at home whenever I am free or basically after I have done all my house chores. I spend about three days to finish one phase and a day requires about one hour spending on watching video, reading material and quiz. I think it is much easier to manage my time because the course is online. Nevertheless, I am glad that I still manage to divide my time efficiently.

6. Your plan for next week?
Based on learning objectives, I will be learning on how to ask and answers about birthdays, dates, working, and school. It will be much complex than these previous weeks though, but I will try my best to learn and make the most out of this course.

Your progress so far

This week, I learned the Mandarin names for a few colours, such as red is hóng, blue is lán, and white is bái. I now know how to request something's pricing and how to bargain with the shopkeeper if it's a pricey item. I gained the ability to ask and respond to directions from others.

3. Your feelings and thoughts

I'm quite fascinated with those who can communicate in Mandarin since it seems so straightforward and easy to them, but it turns out that it is very challenging for a beginner like me. But I'd really like to know more. I can now shop in Chinese shops and interact with the workers. I will feel valuable and make academic progress if I can make them understand the words that I utter.

4. How did you learn and apply the skill of decision making in your EP journey?

My decision making of choosing Mandarin course for my elective posting was my one of best decision that I have made. Why I’m saying this because serious speaking, I am having a great time studying this language., which I have wanted to learn since secondary school, and I am delighted to be able to do so as part of my elective posting course. Even though my pronunciation is still not good enough, I can now speak a little bit of Mandarin, and as long as I can communicate, I don't mind. In addition, if I continue to see Chinese patients, I will be able to speak to them in Mandarin if they are unable to understand Malay or English. I had no second thoughts about my decision.

5. How did you manage your time throughout this EP journey?

According to the course timetable, my Mandarin sessions should last 7 weeks, yet our elective posting only lasts 4 weeks. So, in week two, I intend to learn the lessons for the second and third weeks. The fourth and fifth lessons were completed by me during my third week, which was this week. Last but not least, I'll cover the reminder week lesson during the last week of my posting. I've been able to follow my plan up until this point.

6. Your plan for next week (Week 4)

How to characterise the weather and which months have good or bad weather will be my final week's topic. I'll learn how to explain to colleagues that I'm sick and not feeling well. Learn about our daily activities and hobbies.

JAYA SHANKAR

Matric no: A174107

Date: 7th August 2022

2. MY PROGRESS SO FAR

As per entering 3rd week of the EP project, this time I have made chocolate chips cookies as a change since for the first two weeks I was concentrating on how to bake a cake. This time, especially baking cookies, I have learnt that baking cookies require much lesser time and is much simpler compared to baking a cake. Not to forget, it lasts long too. Therefore, I baked chocolate chips cookies and it turned out great surprisingly. My family members love it since it tasted crunchy and delicious.

3. MY FEELINGS AND THOUGHTS

As the day passes by, I think I’m starting to like baking cakes and cookies. From a person who used to hate cooking and baking stuffs, it is a huge milestone for me as I started to love something that I used to avoid this all the time along. Not only that, I felt so happy and satisfied because after the baking process, all my family members taste my baking goods and they praised and appreciated my effort and interest in baking. It keeps me motivated to do much better and more in future.

4. HOW DID I LEARN TO APPLY THE SKILL OF DECISION MAKING IN MY EP JOURNEY?

Decision making is a process of life journey. From the starting point of EP journey, when I have decided to take baking course, to choose which kind of cakes or cookies should I bake to how many types or amounts of ingredients need to be shop in order to complete this EP project. Even at one point, I increased the amount of chocolate chips or sugar that I have to put in the cookies in order to make the cookies more delicious and sweeter as preferred by my family members but believe me, it was worthy. All of this involves decision making and yes, to be honest, I have learnt a lot throughout the process. As the saying goes, no pain, no gain.

5. HOW DID I MANAGE MY TIME THROUGHOUT THIS EP JOURNEY?

Baking actually consumes a lot of time in terms of planning, researching, getting things set up and finally baking process itself. In order to prevent chaos in future, I have pre-plan things that I need to do for upcoming weekend. For instance, I watch the video on baking cakes and cookies on the weekdays along with searching the best recipe on the net and get the baking stuffs from the shop. While on the weekends, I will bake the cake and at nights, I will combine those video that I have recorded into one and edit them out. In between this, whenever I get time, I will work on my e-book recipe.

6. MY PLAN FOR NEXT WEEK (WEEK 4)

For the final week, I planned to bake ‘biskut sarang semut’ and complete my reflective writing for EP.

1. Name: Irliana binti Ibrahim
Matric Number: A173835
Date: 7th August 2022

2. Your progress so far
Even in week 3, I find myself struggling in some parts of the course. I guess that is expected because learning a new language means it is a never ending learning experience. This week is chiller than the weeks before because I only have 1 class instead of 2. I noticed that my vocabulary has expanded a little bit.

3. Your feelings and thoughts.
I still find it thrilling as I did the first week of learning Korean language which is a great sign as I tend to get bored really easily. I guess that is how it is when you do something that you purely have interest in. Although this week only has 1 class, I felt like still learned as much as I did in the previous weeks. It's cool.

4. How did you learn and apply the skill of decision making in your EP journey?
Learning a language comes with its grammatical prospect. Decision making is constantly applied to test my knowledge regarding which verbs or nouns or adjectives to apply in certain grammar exercise. Since Korean language has rules, strong memory is also required to distinguish whether or not the verb or adjective that has 받침 (a final consonant) is able to add on for example ㄹ/을 or ㄴ/는 after the word. It's intriguing because as something as simple as learning a new language, decision making skill is still applied.

5. How did you manage your time throughout this EP journey?
It is less stressful as I can adjust my schedule as I so choose since I'm taking an online class. Coursera has a feature that helps remind you to participate in a class at the time that you can choose which is a pretty awesome feature.

6. Your plan for next week (Week 4)
The plan is to finish the course by finishing the chapter entitled "Appreciation and Consolation".

1. Name: Nur Erissa binti Eddie Adha
Matric number: A173858
Date: 7/8/2022

2. Your progress so far
In Week 3, I learned how to express my taste for a colour or size, inquire about a pricing, give directions and use some common names for transportation. Some basic hues I have learned are ‘lan’ which means blue and ‘hei’ which means black. The word for money in Chinese is ‘kuai’. For instance, ‘yi kuai’ is equivalent to one dollar. Some of the transportation I learned are ‘gonggongqiche’ means bus while ‘kai che’ means car.

3. Your feelings and thoughts
After several weeks of learning Mandarin, I can say that it’s not as easy as i thought. I still struggle to construct sentences in Mandarin. But compared to the previous week, I have improved alot. Nevertheless, I still find it fascinating and eagerly anticipate each session I take in order to learn as much as I can.

4. How did you learn and apply the skill of decision-making in your EP journey?
I first encounter the need of making decision when I have to select the course that I want to learn during elective posting. I have decided to pursue Mandarin since I have always wanted to learn it, after giving it some thought. I also acquired decision-making skills by schedulling my classes. I made the decision to take Mandarin lessons twice a week in order to make time for the classes on that particular day. I also applied my decision-making skill when taking quizzes as I have to think thoroughly and recall back the learning materials before choosing the best answer.

5. How did you manage your time throughout this EP journey?
I combined seven major topics into four smaller ones because I only have four weeks to master them all. I made the decision to cover one major topic in Week 1 followed by two major topic each week after. My weekly objective is to attend class twice a week and each class normally takes me around two hours to complete, including the time spent watching videos and taking quizzes. I prefer doing this course at night after I have done all of my responsibilities so I can study in peace.

6. Your plan for next week.
I will learn about weather, seasons, personal health and hobby.

Your progress so far.
So far I have learned the important basic chords and also have been fluent in playing those chords. Even in the third week, I still find myself struggling playing the tune in a fast manner as I tend to loose control over the strings. This week I learned to play the C and G7 chords and they were harder than the other chords. I have also started playing the chords while reading the notes which I struggled to do in the previous weeks.

3. Your feelings and thoughts.
This week I felt happier and satisfied after I was able to play the old chords fluently. However I did felt that this week's lesson was way harder and different compared to the other two weeks. Despite that, I still do feel excited on playing new chords and how I will be able to play them fluently in the future.

4. How did you learn and apply the skill of decision-making in your EP journey?
The skill of decision-making in my EP journey started way back when I decided to chose guitar-learning. I applied my decision-making journey when I was confused to choose the path of my EP journey as I had multiple choices like learning a new language or learning to bake. However I decided to learn guitar as I am already quite good in baking while for the language learning part I felt that I can learn it in the future or even in the weekends. In my guitar journey, the decision-making skill played a huge part as well as I had to choose on what type of guitar I wanted to learn. It is also important for me to apply the skill when it came on the amount of efforts I put to play the guitar because at the end of the day it still depends on my decision-making to put the maximum effort in order to play the guitar. Because if I chose to not put any efforst I would still end up playing the same chord I played in the first week.

5. How did you manage your time throughout this EP journey?
Time management was not a problem when it comes my EP journey as I was able to adjust my schedule due to the break from studies. My family and friends are also understanding enough whenver I am busy with my guitar learning session or whenever I am practicing them. Since the music school is just a stone away from my home, I do not have trouble managing time as well.

6. Your plan for next week.
I hope to play more chords and also to be able to play most of the chords fluently. Despite next week being my final week in my EP journey, I hope to improve my skills in playing guitar in the future.

1. Nurul Nabila binti Syed Hassan
A174155
7/8/2022

2. Your progress so far
I was assigned to be the kitchen helper for the next 2 weeks. All the chefs there were very nice and helpful. At first, I was a bit nervous because I am not that familiar with all the kitchen work so I asked my task from the intern there. In the morning, I was tasked to refill the condiments and the task need to be done within one hour. Then, one of the sous chef asked me to help at the kopitiam in which usually one of the kitchen crew will be there to prepare the customer's order. The intern taught me how to prepare the order and he was there to help me in the beginning. After lunch time, I went back to the kitchen and asked the chef there for task. I had to cut the vegetables into different shapes such as julienne, diamond and cube which will be kept as a back up item in the chiller.

3. Your feelings and thoughts
Eventhough i was quite nervous at first but I enjoyed working in the kitchen because I got to learn a lot of new things there.

4. How did you learn and apply the skill of decision making in your EP journey ?
I encounter the need of decision making during my EP when there are a few task given by the chefs at the same time. I would ask which of the task is the most urgent and get it done as soon as possible.

5. How did you manage your time throughout this EP journey ?
I worked from 10am-8pm which was quite tiring but I managed to adapt with it. I would settle any of my house chores in the morning and have some time to watch any dramas at night after work.

6. Your plan for next week
For this final week, I hope to learn more and would like to ask for other task that I haven't done yet at the kitchen so that I can learn.
