The original extraction of salt took place in artificially established "salt gardens": seawater, with its high salt content, reached shallow areas where it stagnated and was evaporated by the sun's radiation.

On March 27, we went on a study visit to Aveiro to the Salinas. We had a kind of guide who told us about the salt waters, the salt, and they gave us a taste of a plant called Salicornio, and at the end they asked us if we wanted to buy salt from there. The salt of Aveiro has been produced by hand for millennia. The production process depends on natural conditions and human intervention. The salt of Aveiro is a valuable resource in the history of the region. The salt pans are a habitat for several birds, such as the black-winged stilt, the little tern, the collared plover and the little egret. The work of the salt pan workers in the salt pans also allows the production of many plant substances. Salinas Aveiro offers guided tours of the salt pans, where it is possible to learn about the history of salt and watch the salt harvest.

Maria Coelho n-°14

Cláudia Carvalho n-°3

When I went to the Salt Flats, I learned and saw many things. I learned how to collect salt, that we should not harm the work of those who take care of the Salt Flats. I tasted a plant that tasted like salt, and there were some cement paths there for us to walk under the Salt Flats. We also talked about the soil of the salt flats. To me, it looked like normal soil, but it was full of leaves and cracks. We touched some strange moss that smelled bad. We saw a bird called "Perna de Pau" (Stick Leg), like that ice cream. That was it. Kisses.

A salt pan is an area where sea salt is produced by evaporating seawater or saltwater lakes.

The importance of salt pans:
Salt pans are increasingly recognized for their ecological importance, as they are a place of shelter and refuge for many aquatic birds, contributing to their conservation and preservation.

Salt pans or salt pans consist of systems of reservoirs or compartments built next to the sea or on the banks of estuaries, served by a network of canals, which use the water from the highest tides to produce salt under the action of heat and air currents through evaporation.

Rodrigo Leal N°21 e Gonçalo Coelho N°9
