Yesterday I shared with my therapist that I've been gardening in a plot that I was able to get access to at my apartment complex. As I was telling her about how I transplanted corn and calabazita and that I have other seedlings growing so that I can transplant them. I shared that I started sharing a canto (song) as I was transplanting and that it was my form of prayer para la madre tierra y para las familias y pequeños para que tengan suficiente comida en estos tiempos. I started to choke up and she asked what was causing that. I told her that I remember how every spring my parents would grow food in our small backyard and that one summer I just planted a lot of beans all over the backyard without telling my parents. They grew and I was really proud and my parents were encouraging and my mom showed me how to cook los ejotes. These memories keep emerging for me as I am focusing on my practice of growing my own food.

A few things that I've found that I gravitate to during this time:
- Valuing the outdoors. My family and I have been observing local plants/animals, connecting these to past experiences through oral storytelling, and researching any new things we found. For example, last weekend we saw lightning bugs outside and told stories about how we used to see them/had memories of them from childhood but are observing that they're less prevalent today.
- Reading together. This is both news (sharing articles) and audiobooks. This is something I've been doing with both family and friends.
- Cooking! I just got invited to be a part of a virtual recipe exchange and we're writing down our favorite quarantine meals/trying out new ones.
- Games: Both virtual and in person. We've gotten out scrabble, dominos, cards, etc. and are about to download this "Houseparty" app to play games with friends virtually.
- Budgeting: Discussing budgets and finances openly and planning for the future.
- Crafts/art: We've been painting, hanging pictures for gallery walls, coloring etc. I'd also include multimodal videos/content sent to friends and family in this category- it takes some skill to make fun check-in videos and take family photos.

These are all things that I think are useful in education, either virtually or in person, and I hope to see more community activities/knowledge valued and incorporated in school settings after these events.

I have been connecting a lot with family recipes. Food is an important part of my family and how we connect. Growing up, I learned recipes from my grandfather that he brought with him from Italy. I learned these through repeated practice and spoken word. These recipes are not written down, but are ones that feel like home. During this time, I have been making a lot of those recipes, as well as connecting with my family about other recipes. My mom and I have been texting recipes back and forth, as well as sharing our stories or reviews we have of them.

Part of my pedagogies from home have been the way my parents have been able to embody home wherever they may be. As a son of formerly undocumented parents, they were unable to come back for many years. Once they were able to freely go back home, we began our tradition of annually making a trip in car from Wisconsin all the way to the state of Guanajuato, MX. Our migrations to and from our home in Mexico, were guided by the mountain and were always greeted by the land where many generations of my family have and continue to live.
