Something that always goes along with Veteran's Day are poppies. People pass them out at the grocery store, at the 4-way stop in my hometown, and at the Veteran's Day assembly. Children might not know that the poppy is a symbol of this day. Help kids learn more about the significance of the poppy in connection to Veteran's Day by making these coffee filter poppies!
Just paint the coffee filters. Blow dry or let them air dry. Crumple and unfold them. Then glue the buttons on!

One of the things that our Elementary school does for Veterans day is our High School serves the veterans breakfast and they use homemade placemats that the elementary school kids had made. They usually say "Thank You" for your service. I know when my kids were little they enjoyed making them and my dad and both sets of Grandpa's enjoyed trying to find the kids placemats.

I think having older students go to the homes of veterans and help them do things that need done is a good idea. I know that all veterans aren't older but some don't have time to get everything done like yard work. It is a small way to show gratitude for the things they did for our country. Younger students can make cards or colors pictures for the veterans that can be delivered by the older students.

An activity I would do growing up was create care packages with goodies and a special message of thanks and we would drop them off to the VA hospital in the Chicagoland area.

We have done a few different activities for Veteran’s Day in the past with younger kids. One activity is simply talking about what Veteran’s Day means with the kids. Younger kids don’t always know what this day is for, so talking about what it means can be a good activity with the kids. Another thing we have done is make cards for Veteran’s Day to hang up or give to veterans. This is special to veterans and even more special if kids have relatives who are veterans that they can give the cards to. One last activity we have done with older kids is have kids bring in their family members who are veterans to talk with the kids. This is very personal and special to the kids and their families. There could be food or a lunch following this activity for everyone.

If the teacher is willing to get with an organization that helps Veteran's in the area, having the children draw personal "Thank Yous" for them is a great way to show the appreciation we have for them. Asking parents if they know Veterans in their neighborhood and having the children go to their house and thank them to their face, and maybe offer to help them with some chores if they need it could be another way to show appreciation. I think that schools who still do Veterans Day programs and have Veterans come to the school and have the kids preform songs is an awesome way to say thanks!!

I think it would be fun to have the children cut stars out of red, white and blue construction paper and then paste them into a circle to form a wreath. They could also sprinkle them with glitter if they wanted. While making the wreaths, it would be nice to talk to the children about any veterans they might know or have in their family. Then I would let the children decide if they wanted to take their wreath’s home, give to a local veteran that they might know, or even take to a local VA hospital.

I think it would be a fun idea to have the students bring in a family or friend that is a veteran and for students that do not have a family member or friend who is a veteran I would put these students into groups with the other Veterans. I would have us all sit in a circle and the students can introduce their family member or friend and tell us about them. I would then have an art activity planned where each student would get a red heart and they would decorate it into a flag. I would give them white stripes and blue stars that they would get to glue on the heart. Last week at my daycare we had students bring in their family and friend veterans and I thought this was a very good activity, and it went very smoothly.

I made this ball drop game for my day care class's Valentines party on Friday. They had a lot of fun. I cut holes out of a box the size of each sensory ball, they had to push a ball through the hole. My next step is going to be to color each hole the same color as each ball so they can learn to match the ball color to the hole color. The balls are also sensory balls which makes them fun for the children to play with. I decorated the box for Valentines day but I'm going to take the construction paper off and be able to use it for a fine motor skills activity and color matching activity any time. The age group of my class is ten to fifteen months old.
