Conventions of a Magazine

A masthead at the top so readers can identify the magazine. The masthead is usually a colour that will stand out and catch your eye.

A cover photo is the main image in the centre of the magazine. This is what the readers will see first and the image is usually an actor playing a main character in a film.

The headline is below the image and tells the reader what the main story is about,

The strapline is above or below the headline, and tells the reader more about the main story inside the magazine.

Some magazines have a banner at the bottom to tell the reader what else they can expect to find inside the magazine.

There is usually features or pull quotes from different articles to show what else is inside the magazine.

Magazines also have a colour scheme that they stick to throughout every magazine, so the reader can identify it.

I think that my magazine cover sticks to these conventions as I thought that these qwew quite important so I stuck to them. My masthead is the biggest text on the cover and I put it in white so that it stands out against the picture. I used a clear, bright image of Menna who is the main actor in my trailer as she would be the most recongnisable character so I thought it made sense to use her. I included a headline towards the bottom of the image to show readers the main story is about my film. I also used a banner and features to show what else is inside the magazine to draw readers in even if they aren't interested in m film. I used a bright colour scheme so that it stands out against the image. I used a yellow colour on 'Dark City' as I used a pale yellow on my print products so I wanted to link them together subtly. I thought that the colours I used worked quite well as I didn't use too many so my magazine still looks professional.

Conventions of a Billboard

The logo/title for the film is shown on the billboard so that people will identify it as being advertisement for the same film. The same logo is used on all of the print products to establish brand identity.

Most billboards tend to have very little text and focus more on the image, as billboards are usually seen by those driving so they don't have time to read.

The image on the billboard tends to be one that hasn't been used on any of the other print products. The image is high quality as billboards tend to be quite big so the image has to look clear and stand out. The image is usually of the main character or action within a key scene.

Most billboards tend to have a line from the film that is well known on the billboard. 'The average person used 10% of their brain capacity. Imagine what she could do with 100%', 'The dream is real', 'Don't let go', and 'Rest in Pieces' are examples.

The billboards usually have the production company and directors name on them.

They also have the films release date, and some also have the social media and website for the film so people can look it up/

Billboards are also easy to read and they are clear.

The title of my film is in the middle of my billboard in large white text so that it stands out so that people will see that first. I also used the same font that I used within my trailer and on my other print products to establish a brand identity as I thought this was important and made my billboard look professional. I tried to keep my billboard simple so that the main focus was the image but I also wanted to have all the relevant information on there. I slightly challenged the conventions of a billboard by having Menna standing in front of the detective map rather than having action of a key scene. I think this worked well though as the detective map is one of the key points in the film and is quite important. I also used an image similar to the other ones I used for my other products as I thought this image was the best. On my billboard I wrote 'Only you saw it. Only you can save them.' which isn't said within my trailer but is the key sentence throughout my trailer and sets the scene for the film and instantly tells the audience what the film is about. I didn't include the name of the production company on my billboard but I did include the directors name. I didn't include the productions company name as it made the billboard look cluttered but I think it looks fine without it.

Conventions of a Poster

The posters all have a title that stands out and is the largest font on the poster. They tend to be at the bottom of the poster but some place them in other areas.

The image usually shows the main character(s) in a way that shows what the film is about. The images are always high quality and tend to be mid-shots or close-ups.

The poster also features subheadings which say the actors name, any slogans from the film that may be well known, the director, the production company logo and when the film is released.

The posters are kept simple and neat so that they appeal to the eye. They are also clear so that they can be easily read and they are eye catching.

My poster has 'Dark City' in the largest font at the bottom so that the image is still clear and can be seen. I also have the image as the main character and I used a high quality mid-shot. I chose to only use one character as she is the one seen the most so I thought it made the most sense and it looked best. I have the two main actors names on the top but I didn't include the directors name as I wanted the poster to be simple. However I did include the credits of the film on the second poster I made which has the directors name in and also more information. I think my poster uses the conventions of a normal film poster.

Conventions of a Trailer

All trailers feature the production company logo/name.

The film title is shown within the trailer.

Age Certification is shown at the start.

Social media is shown.

Characters are briefly introduced. It should be clear who the main characters are.

Music is played throughout the trailer. Often there are voice overs.

Intertitles to give the audience more information about the actors and the film.

Release Date.

My trailer definitely follows these conventions as I think that they are very important and make a trailer seem like a real movie trailer and it looks more professional. My trailer features my production company logo and name and also the distribution company as I found that this was also quite common. I show the name of my film at the very end so that it sticks within peoples minds after they finish watching the trailer. I think that it's also a good way to end it rather than the trailer just fading to black. I also made sure to include the age certification at the start so that it was clear who my trailer was suitable for. Throughout the trailer it's clear that Max (Menna) is the main character as she is shown in the very first scene and then throughout. I also included music that starts quite slowly and then gets more dramatic as the trailer goes on as I think that that makes it much more interesting than no music or a song that doesn't build. I included intertitles to show the actors names and to give them more of an idea of what the film is about. I included the release date right at the end along with social media, a hashtag and credits so that people can get involved with the film online and learn more about it as this is something that a lot of people like to do.

Conventions of a DVD Cover

A film review quote.

A blurb.

Special Features.

Back images.

Compulsory Features (e.g. age certification)

Main Title

Certificate and production on the side.

Main image.

My DVD cover features a film review from totalfilm as I thought that having a review from a reputable source was quite important as it would make more people want to buy and see the film once it's out on DVD if they didn't see it in cinemas. I did some research and found that most people were more likely to buy a DVD cover with a good review on it rather than no review as they knew they most likely wouldn't be wasting their money. I also included a short blurb as I wanted to tell people what happens in the film because this again would make them more likely to buy it as it tells them more information about the film, and allows them an insight into what genre the film is. I also included special features as many people enjoy those as they feel as though they're getting an exclusive behind the scenes look at the film that others who don't purchase the DVD aren't getting. I made sure to add four small images as well as a larger image to the back to give another insight into what the film is about. In one of the small images you can see Louise (Me( being kidnapped, and another the note that Max and Faith are left by the bad guy. I thought these were quite interesting images and key parts to the story which is why I included those as well as the compulsory features such as age certification and the not for rental sticker, as these are also important in making a product look real and professional. The main title is the biggest text on the whole DVD cover as I wanted it to be clear what film the DVD was. I also used a similar image to the ones on my print products to link them together and further reinforce the brand identity I created. I also reinforced this brand identity by using the same font and colour scheme. I also put the title as well as the age rating and distribution company on the side.
