1) The lotus effect is a phenomenon where water droplets lotus leaves, while picking up dirt and dust along the way. This makes the surface effectively self-cleaning.

2) Biomimicry is when scientists and designers study how nature solves problems and then use those ideas to create new technology or products. Since plants and animals have had millions of years to figure out smart ways to survive, copying their designs can help us make things that work better.

3) Japan’s Shinkansen bullet train uses biomimicry by copying the kingfisher bird’s beak to reduce noise and travel faster when coming out of tunnels. It also draws inspiration from owls and penguins to make the train quieter and more energy-efficient.

4) Shark skin has tiny, tooth-like patterns that help reduce drag and stop bacteria from sticking to it. Scientists have copied this design to create swimsuits, boat coatings, and hospital surfaces that are faster, cleaner, and more resistant to germs.

The lotus effect works through a combination of superhydrophobicity and a microscopic surface structure on the leaf. Tiny, waxy, crystal-like bumps cover the surface, creating a rough, textured layer. This structure minimizes the contact area between water and the leaf and traps air, making the surface incredibly water-repellent. Consequently, water forms nearly spherical droplets that easily roll off the leaf, carrying dirt and other contaminants away, achieving a self-cleaning effect.

Q1)The lotus effect is basically is a process that the plant's leaves does not absorbs water. Instead it lets the water roll off by itself due to gravity, collecting dirt and germs along the way.'

Q3) The bullet train does biomimicry in two ways; one is its speed reaching high speeds of 320 km per hour like the pelegrine falcon which is the fastest animal in the world. Another one which involves mimicking the kingfisher's beak to solve the tunnel boom problem that has been caused by explosive pressure created by the regular train shape when exiting tunnels since it causes noise pollution, especially at night while some are sleeping. In the kingfisher's case, it dives into water with minimal splash and noise. So the train has increased speed, reduced noise and significant power savings.

Q4) The shark skin repels bacteria and repels drag on aircraft and boats by mimicking dermal denticles on a shark skin.

Early humans observed how animals hunted, kept warm, avoided danger, and traveled over snow and ice.

3: 'Bio' means living organism; 'mimicry' means to imitate. Biomimicry is thus the practice of imitating life and nature. The Shinkansen Japanese bullet train is Japan's extensive high-speed rail network, famous for its speed, reliability, and punctuality, connecting major cities on its main islands since 1964.

4: Shark skin is covered by tiny flat V-shaped scales, called dermal denticles, that are more like teeth than fish scales. These denticles decrease drag and turbulence, allowing the shark to swim faster and more quietly. After the shark-skin mimicry, a flame treatment is applied to the surface. This process forms the necessary hierarchical micro/nano-structures, similar to a lotus leaf's surface, that create the superhydrophobic, lotus effect.

The engineers noticed how kingfisher birds are able to slice through the air and dive into the water to catch prey while barely making a splash. They then re-designed the front end of the train to mimic the shape of the kingfisher’s beak. Not only did this help to reduce noise and eliminate tunnel booms, it also allowed the train to travel 10% faster using 15% less electricity. The kingfisher is a bird that dives into water to catch its prey. It has a long, narrow pointed beak that allows it to enter the water while barely making a splash. The beak steadily increases in diameter from the tip to the head, which helps reduce impact when the bird hits the water.
