My community is the members of LMC athletics. Specifically, the members associated with Baseball, Softball, and Soccer. These include the coaches, athletic directors that oversee these sports, and most importantly the players.

The problem

Our dirt and grass fields (soccer, baseball, softball) are being concerned with multiple issues. Due to Michigan's weather, it snows and rains a good amount of the time. Especially, when in season.

Why is this a problem?

This is a problem for these sports because it results in issues such as canceled practices and games, player injuries, and high field maintenance. Canceled practices and games makes it hard for the teams to get better and to also play important conference games that later determine regionals. The biggest problem is injuries. With all the water mixed with grass and dirt, it creates mud that is easy to slip on in which injuries occur. It is also hard to keep up the field maintenance for these fields. There is only so much a maintenance crew can do to make the field better (which is usually only to put more dirt down that adds up costs over time).

Why should we care about this?

We should care about our athletic fields because we want to give our athletes the best chance of success. Without unturfed fields, they are not given the best chances.

THE PROPOSAL

My proposal is to create turf fields for our soccer, baseball, and softball fields to limit the amount of injuries, lower the field maintenance, and to limit the amount of canceled games and practices.

Resources needed to turf our fields

To turf our fields, it will take about 3-6 weeks at most to get the job done and it will cost about $5.50 and $18.75 per square foot. There will also need to be a field crew to complete the turfing.
