They argue that multilingual students bring valuable linguistic knowledge to the classroom and that teachers should adopt translanguaging. Curricula should prioritize writing as a tool for public participation and social action over writing-as-testing.

3. All writing modes should develop simultaneously not sequentially.

1. Academic reading is the foundation of disciplinary writing. Students who engage superficially with texts lack exposure to disciplinary discourse, genre conventions, and argument structures, which directly hinders their ability to write scholarly texts.

2. Students value reading/writing theoretically but reject their utility when assignments feel disconnected from grades or class discourse. This leads to minimal engagement, depriving them of models for effective writing. Writing assignments risk irrelevance if not integrated into classroom dialogue or assessment. Educators must demonstrate how reading informs writing.

3. Fixing reading pedagogy can directly improve writing outcomes. For example, integrating academic reading outcomes and instruction across disciplines at all levels; proposing cross-disciplinary collaboration to scaffold reading-to-writing skills.

1. Universities over-rely on monolithic, text-centric literacy standards that fail to address the diverse communicative demands of academic/professional worlds. It should be a multifaceted practice that involves more than just traditional reading and writing. It includes a variety of literacies, such as digital literacy, information literacy, and media literacy, which are all essential in navigating the modern academic landscape.

2. Literacy instruction cannot be one-size-fits-all. Disciplines have unique epistemic norms, genre conventions, and semiotic practices. It is important to highlight the importance of interdisciplinary approaches in developing literacy in university education, making students engage with texts and knowledge from various disciplines. Therefore, they can adapt their literacy practices to a range of academic genres and communication styles.

3. Literacy education and assessment should be aligned with the multi-literacies framework. Academic institutions should shift literacy teaching, moving beyond traditional methods and incorporating new media and digital tools into the curriculum.

To get students more involved, reading should be clearly taught, shown through examples, and connected to assignments that matter. Whether students put effort into reading often depends on how motivated they are. Professors should design tasks where reading is required to do well, instead of making it something students can choose to ignore.

Carillo argues that the common practice of teaching reading and writing as separate skills makes it harder for students to use what they learn in different academic contexts. She says that reading should be taught as an active, rhetorical process, just like writing. Students who are not taught to read critically have a harder time thinking about, evaluating, and engaging with ideas; hence, it is definitely hard for them to write or respond to what they read. Understanding is not a simple or passive skill; it is the basis for the combination of requirements of more advanced thinking, such as making an argument or putting things together. Many times, students do not get the chance to fully engage with texts when reading and writing are taught separately, which leads to shallow writing and a limited understanding of course material. Carillo wants a more connected approach that helps students read and write better and gets them ready for communication in school and in the real world.

Edwards and Paz say that the common belief that great writing comes from natural talent is wrong because it makes students less likely to try writing and does not accurately describe what writing is really like. They emphasize that writing is not a single act of genius but a process that involves many people working together and making changes based on feedback and shared effort. The authors want a more realistic and inclusive approach to the improvement of writing, that is, focusing on community, peer interaction, and organizing ideas instead of valuing individual talent. This way of looking at things gives students the power to see writing as something they can learn and improve over time. Using this framework makes writing easier for more students.

They argue that 21st century college students need not only a “collection of literacies” useful in participating meaningfully in their college experiences but also “meta-level” understandings of how college works (82). In the introduction of this journal, the authors give the term genius to people that have led how modern people think and perform in literature/writing. In that point, they would be pioneers, but just because they gained traction doesn’t mean they were the best because they were the first. \

“Genius writers” don’t misguide us writers, they set up expectations and guidelines for us to follow. And that is where I disagree with the next point.
I did really appreciate the author's understanding that imitations of the best isn’t what produces good writing. Originality plays a big role in good writing, but the authors don’t fully go into talking about why creativity isn’t prioritized, and instead, whimsically blame it on genetics.

Drawing on historical research and rhetorical theory, they argue that writing has always been a collaborative, social, and learned process. Edwards and Paz highlight how the myth of genius discourages students by making writing seem inaccessible or reserved for a gifted few. Instead, they call for a pedagogical shift that embraces writing as a teachable, communal act—one grounded in imitation, conversation, and revision. Their chapter reframes writing as a democratic skill, encouraging educators to dismantle harmful myths and empower all students to see themselves as writers.

Mike Bunn encourages students to approach reading not just for content, but with the mindset of a writer who notices structure, word choice, and technique. He says that all writing is made up of choices that the writer makes on purpose. By finding those choices, students can start to learn how writing works from the essence of texts. Bunn shows how reading and writing are connected by proposing his "reading like a writer" method to demonstrate how students naturally start to use what they learn in their writing when they read with purpose.

She identifies three challenges and opportunities for writing today: developing new models of writing, designing a new curriculum for those models, and creating teaching methods to support them. Yancey notes that writing is more ubiquitous and participatory than ever, with people composing on blogs, social media, and networks as part of everyday life. She calls for a rethinking of literacy education to prepare students as “citizen composers” rather than mere test-takers, highlighting the need for educators to embrace multimodal, networked, and socially engaged composing practices.

By actively analyzing professional texts, students can "recognize important decisions you might face and techniques you might want to use when working on your own writing," making reading a direct form of learning about composition.

Contextual understanding is crucial for effective RLW: Bunn emphasizes that readers must consider the "context" of a text—including the author's purpose, intended audience, and genre—before and during reading.

The text raises several crucial points that significantly contribute to the conversation about writing. One key claim is that writing has historically been devalued compared to reading, often being associated with "unpleasantness" or merely rudimentary skills, a perception rooted in its historical link to testing and obedience rather than creative individuality or knowledge production. Another important point highlights how the study and teaching of the writing process emerged in the mid-20th century, offering a more nuanced understanding of composing but was subsequently constrained by formalization and standardized testing practices. Furthermore, the report asserts that digital technology, particularly Web 2.0, has fundamentally transformed writing, making it a ubiquitous, self-sponsored, and social activity that necessitates new pedagogical approaches beyond traditional print-based models. Finally, the report culminates in a call for a new conception of writing instruction for the 21st century, emphasizing the articulation of new composing models, the design of a comprehensive K-graduate school writing curriculum that views writing as a distinct field of study, and the creation of innovative teaching practices that leverage technology for collaboration and critical information discernment, all with the goal of fostering a new kind of "citizen writer."

Discrepancy Between Perceived vs. Actual Reading Proficiency: The article highlights a significant gap where undergraduates often self-appraise their academic reading proficiency highly, while faculty rate it much lower. This contributes to the writing conversation by showing that students may not recognize their own reading deficiencies, which inevitably impacts their ability to synthesize sources and write effectively at a college level.

Student Motivation/Strategy Driven by Grades, Not Learning: Undergraduates frequently read only to "get by" or for "desired grades," focusing on information they believe will be tested rather than engaging in deeper exploration of concepts. This directly impacts writing, as superficial reading leads to superficial understanding and less nuanced, critical writing.

The "Missing" Student Perspective in Reading Research: The authors explicitly state that previous literature on academic reading has largely been faculty-driven and quantitative, thus limiting the representation of undergraduates' personal experiences and thoughts. Their qualitative study directly addresses this gap, emphasizing the value of understanding the student voice in shaping effective literacy instruction.

Bunns explains how it is important to ask questions and notice what type of style an author uses. There are many techniques used when writing, so it is important to identify the kinds of choices an author makes. He explains how questioning these choices can lead to a better outcome in your writing and finding a style that suits your best attributes as well.

Miller and Schulz’s “University Literacy: A Multi-literacies Model” describes a four-part multi-literacies framework applied to design a set of courses for new first-year students to better prepare and therefore retain them. They argue that 21st-century college students need not only a “collection of literacies” useful in participating meaningfully in their college experiences but also “meta-level” understandings of how college works (82). Miller and Schulz use theoretical concepts and existing arguments about how students learn to support their argument, calling for a shift in how higher education thinks about the needs of first-year students.

But as students go into high school and college, the skill of writing becomes more important. But as the skill of writing progresses the relationship with reading will deteriorate and leave students with unfamiliar strategies of reading.

In “Only Geniuses Can Be Writers” by Dustin Edwards and Enrique Paz, they seek to disprove the idea that great writers seem to be born with their creative ideas and writing capabilities. They do this by showing that writing is actually a collaborative effort that takes time, rather than something that is normally done alone. They seek to create a culture of sharing creativity with others rather than feeding the myth of writers making literature solely by themselves.

In “Writing in the 21st century,” Yancey argues that we are now living in the “age of composition", a time where people are writing more than ever before, especially outside of school. But as this is a shift in the outside world, inside schools are more focused on teaching in a traditional way. She explains how schools need to focus on the more modern ways of the 21st century to be able to utilize these tools and embrace them.

In the text “Reading Is Important, but I don't read,” Gorzycki and her co-authors explore a common contradiction in many college students that the importance of reading is important, but many do not complete this task or do it often. This study shows what students think about reading. It's too boring, too long, or not relevant to the class. Which then leads them to rely on other sources. Which also leads to a bigger issue. Educators assume that students have a habit of reading with meaning. But many struggle to engage with readings when the mindset of many is that it's boring or long. The author's suggestion to improve this is for educators to rethink the way they teach.

When you Read Like a Writer (RLW) you work to identify some of the choices the author made so that you can better understand how such choices might arise in your own writing.

There are many ways to read, but generally speaking there are two ways.If the building has Co-rinthian columns, we can trace the origin and development of Corinthian columns; we are interested as historians. But if we are interested as architects, we may or may not know about the history of the Corinthian style.

For most college students RLW is a new way to read, and it can be dif-ficult to learn at first. Making things even more difficult is that your college writing instructor may expect you to read this way for class but never actually teach you how to do it.

. Relying too heavily on AI for writing tasks might reduce the cognitive load typically involved in critical thinking, planning, drafting, and revising. Writing involves many cognitive skills like idea organization, argumentation, and memory recall, all of which might be less engaged if AI takes over certain aspects of writing. This could ultimately impact a person’s ability to develop and refine their intellectual capabilities over time.

. The more individuals rely on AI-generated writing, the more it could potentially stifle creativity. Anson highlights that part of the cognitive value of writing lies in the creative process of developing original thoughts, arguments, and narrative structures. AI-generated content may lack the "personal touch" or deeper level of creative engagement that comes from writing oneself.

. The availability of AI writing tools may pose challenges for educators and assessment systems, especially in academic settings. If students use AI to complete assignments, teachers may struggle to accurately assess the student's ability to think critically and communicate effectively. It also raises concerns about the fairness of grading if AI becomes ubiquitous in generating work.

Warner mainly mentions that writing is a communication between writer and the readers. Moreover, in order to make the writing better, the writer need to ask for feedback and then revise it. College writing is more difficult than the our daily writing, which requires students more time and energy.

. Harris explains how the Chinese government, through its influence over technology and standards, has pushed for specific ways of inputting Chinese characters on digital devices. One of the biggest shifts was the development of the Pinyin system, which allows for Romanized typing to input Chinese characters, making it easier for people to use Chinese across digital platforms. This shift in typing practices helped solidify China's digital dominance, especially as mobile phones and technology became more integrated into daily life.

.This video highlights how Chinese tech giants like Huawei, Xiaomi, and Tencent are not just dominating in China but also expanding their reach globally. These companies have influenced how technology is built, distributed, and accessed, all while pushing their own standards that are often shaped by the Chinese government's interests. This has profound implications for global tech ecosystems.

.Harris puts forward that China has strategically built its own version of the internet and digital standards to counter the west, and this shift has allowed them to shape how the world interacts with Chinese content and language. Whether through the development of its own operating systems or how Chinese-made phones are customized for local needs, the Chinese state is gaining power over the global digital environment in ways that most people don’t fully realize.

Johnson's ideas

. Johnson argues that good ideas are often a result of collaboration, not solitary moments of genius. Innovation happens in environments where people can connect, share, and build on each other's ideas. The more people are able to bounce ideas off one another, the better the chances of breakthroughs. It’s not about one person having a "eureka" moment alone but rather about the collective flow of ideas in a network.

. One of Johnson’s key concepts is the idea of the "adjacent possible." This refers to the idea that new ideas are often the product of the build up of progress from things that already exist. Innovation builds on what’s around it, opening up new opportunities or “adjacent” possibilities. The boundaries of what’s possible expand over time as ideas connect with one another.

. Johnson challenges the idea that all great ideas come from sudden “eureka” moments. Instead, he suggests that many breakthrough ideas begin as slow hunches—vague or incomplete thoughts that, over time, develop into something larger. By allowing time for these hunches to stew and connect with other ideas, people can eventually form revolutionary concepts.
