1. In Monster, Steve Harmon used cinematography jargon to give you a better understanding of his perspective. How does Greg's use of cinematography add or detract from your understanding of his perspective? Was this technique relevant to the book?

2. Greg seems detached yet comes from am intact family with religious grounding who embrace the differences of others (Earl). As a YA reader does this make Greg's character more or less believable?

3. A few of our readings would have been considered girl or boy oriented. How would you describe Me and Earl and the Dying girl? Boy oriented, girl oriented, or gender neutral? Why?

This novel gives YA readers another perspective to High school life with the added complication of having a relationship/friendship with someone with a terminal illness.
Quite frankly, the comedy in the book allowed readers to laugh when they are not so sure they are supposed to with the understanding that the diagnosed person may want to laugh as well.

This is one view of Me and Earl and the Dying Girl. I thought contrary to her review as I found this laugh out loud funny. Because of their shortcomings, I found Greg and Earl believable and unpredictable with their wit.

Andrews uses a mixture of prose and movie script format. Andrews also has a masterful sense of metaphor and simile that add comedic value as well as a sense of relatability between Greg and the reader.
ex. "I am the Thomas Edison of conversational stupidity." (p.173)
There is also a sense of contradiction that appears to give balance to the story.
ex. Earl has more compassion toward Rachel than Greg and is more sincere in Rachel the Film. Greg is a friend to all and none at the same time.
"One man's suffering is another man's joy." (p.66)
Earl describes things that he enjoys negatively.
" Man, this taste stupid. This taste like some kinda... undersea...urinal." (p.218)

Me and Earl and the Dying Girl is a young adult fiction based on the friendship of three unlikely characters during their senior year of high school.
-Me/Greg Gaines the self deprecating Jewish boy who denies his own social skills and has no idea about the opposite sex. He also is stricken with perfuse sweating as well as an inordinate production of mucus.
He is also the narrator of the story.
-Earl, the lifelong best friend/coworker of Greg. He is vertically challenged and makes up for his lack of stature with a bad attitude, a vulgar mouth and an intimidating windmill kick to the head. He enjoys weird food and making movies parody films with Greg. Did I mention e was black and comes from the hood?
-Rachel a former childhood friend of Greg from Hebrew school who has recently been diagnosed with acute myelogenous leukemia. She is also now the "charity case" of Greg as Greg's mom demands him to become friends with her.
