It's essential to create early learning environments where children are welcomed, accepted, and affirmed for all of who they are.

Language should not be use to weaponize a child's access to learning. Often in early learning and care settings, language assessments are performed in ways that label children's development and communicate there may be delays. We have to examine who develops assessments, the bias of the individual performing the assessments and the interventions used to support language development.

Part of building relationships with children and families is being curious and open to their culture. That includes the language. Saying a family's language is not relevant or does not exist is a type of linguistic racism. Most languages have regional markers, it does not mean it is not a legitimate language with those markers.

A stronger connection and relationship is built with students and their families. Students are included, materials are more accessible. In our work, we are able to be intentional and create a holistic approach and understanding of all the needs. A key factor to building strong and meaningful relationships is communication. Speaking to people in a language they feel comfortable with is healing and makes them feel seen.
