Characters in 'No Exit.' by Abby DAVEY

In this Padlet I'd like you to explore your reaction to, and the author's creation of, the characters in the play. Your task is to pick a character and you must complete the Colour and Symbols routine to show an interpretive understanding of their creation. You must: 1. pick a colour that you think defines the character's personality. EXPLAIN why you made this choice and support your choice with discussion and evidence from the text. 2. Draw a symbol for that character (it must not already exist in the text) and also EXPLAIN why you think that symbol is representative of the character (using references to the text). In both of these examples you should be able to link character actions to personality and temperament to show an understanding of character progression.

Garcin - dirty yellow

Yellow is a bright and vibrant color which often symbolizes joy and positivity. This is somewhat true relating to Garcin as his name means "boy" in French and he was a pacifist journalist. However, yellow also symbolizes cowardice which also applies to Garcin who deserted when he was conscripted into the Brazilian army.

Dirty yellow carries with it a vibe of sickness. It is the color of vomit and pus. Garcin fits this description as his actions, such as heavily abusing his wife and cheating right in front of her, were disgusting.

Garcin - I think the colour that represents him a very dark yellow. This is because while yellow by itself is a vibrant and bright colour, having it darkened would bring it down to a colour of dirt. I feel this colour fits Garcin well because he has two sides to him. His good cause for Pacifism, which could be represented by yellow, was darkened by his other actions, such as being extremely abusive to woman, as well as his cowardly and irresponsible attitude towards life.

The colour I would choose for Garcin is ochre. The yellow tone represents his deceitful and untrustworthy nature towards his wife as he has affairs with other women. The brownish-yellow colour of ochre symbolises his cowardice in life, such as when he attempts to flee conscription. Another instance is when Garcin tries to sit in the corner of the hotel room and not discuss his sins with everyone in cowardice.

Estelle - Fuchsia
This colour is an intense, purplish-pink colour, and I think it represents Estelle's selfishness and passion. Purple is associated with power, ambition and self-importance. On page 28, Estelle says, "it pleased him no end, having a daughter. It didn't please me!" This quote is an example of Estelle's selfishness. First of all, she has an affair outside of her marriage, disregarding her husband's feelings. Then when she becomes pregnant and has her baby, she does not even consider giving her unwanted child to the father, but instead drowns her, even though the father seems to have been willing to care for the child.

Estelle - Violet
I chose violet as a colour to represent Estelle for a few reasons. Firstly, violet is a light shade of purple, representing her gentleness and delicacy. It also demonstrates how she is shallow as violet does not have a depth similar to a brighter colour. Estelle is a shallow person as she married a person only for their wealth as she was "terribly poor" and so married someone who "was old enough to be (her) father." Purple is also a royal colour and this shows how Estelle is self-obsessed and thinks very highly of herself. Violet is also a complex colour and is made up of blue and red which demonstrates Estelle's conmplexity of her mind and her life. Her life is complicated because of her affair and her child. Her mind is complicated as she cannot accept that she is dead and forces Inez and Garcin to refer to them as "absent". The red also represents her emotional side and how she "brought a big stone," and "saw the rings spreading on the water."

Garcin
Colour: Olive green

I think olive green represents Garcin because it is a colour that can be easily found in nature. This shows that Garcin's cowardice was natural. However, this colour can also be described as murky and unpleasant , which portrays how Garcin treated his wife miserably, thus showing the appalling side of his personality.

Estelle - Colour
I think I would choose a light pink to represent Estelle. Pink is a light, gentle colour and is often thought to be a delicate colour. Despite this, pink is a complex colour made up of two other colours - red and white. Estelle too is complex as she seems like a decent woman, but in reality she is a murderer. Red is a colour that represents war, danger and fire, as well as anger, all of the negative emotions/things, although pink is mostly made up of white. Estelle also has her "red" parts, such as the part that made her cheat on her husband, and kill her child.
When Estelle walks into the room, she speaks as if she is a civilised woman, referring to Garcin and Inez as "this gentleman, this lady," and pretending to be a decent lady. But as the play progresses, we come to find out that she is not a very nice person and is selfish and only concerned about herself.

Estelle - Colour - Deep Purple
I chose deep purple to represent Estelle because it is the colour known to be associated with the wealthy or royalty, something that Estelle spent much of her time idolising. From marrying a man "old enough to be [her] father" just because he was "very well off", to bragging about all the well to do people she knew on earth to Inez, such as the "Dubois-Seymours", this royal undertone never stops. However, purple is made up of two colours, blue and red. Blue, being Estelle's exterior, is representative of what she wants people to see of her on the outside, as it is often seen as an open, holistic colour. The red however, is representative of Estelle on the inside. Red is commonly associated with passion and determination, both of which Estelle has a lot of. However, it is also the colour of blood, something which Estelle has a lot of on her hands, what with not wanting a baby, but the "baby came, worst luck" so she "brought a big stone" and threw the baby off the balcony, Roger "saw it all" "the rings spreading on the water".

Inez seems to detest the only males, in general, greatly, "I don't care much for men anyway". She starts complaining about Garcin's mouth mere moments after finally settling down and becoming quiet: "Can't you keep your mouth still? You keep twisting it around all the time. It's grotesque." She tried to seduce Estelle and even resorted to insulting and denouncing Garcin in order to make Estelle hers - "[ironically] - a hero!" She is intelligent proves so many times through her analysis of the situation, "we are criminals, murderers, all three of us," "each of us will act as torturer of the two others."

Like the picture below but imagine a ratio of 7:3...

The slightest touch can also cause large ripples throughout it. It represents her temperamental and flighty nature, evident in her actions in killing her child and quick mood changes, from denying to talking about her misdeeds, then crying over it. There is also the matter of her physical beauty, which does nothing to detract from her pettiness and cruelty, presented in the form of the silt below the surface of the puddle. The actual size of the puddle is also a reference to her shallow nature.

While on the surface it appears to be just a colour, maybe representative of passion, it is really a complex and colour with not-so-subtle dark undertones. While Estelle is shallow, she is also hiding secrets deep beneath the surface, behind her facade. The colour can also represent blood and danger which also lurks behind her facade as she threw her baby off a bridge without a second thought.

This colour is as close to a pale yellow as you can get with it still being green. Inez has a greed that causes her to manipulate the people around her to her own gain, such as with her cousins wife. As green is the colour of envy and yellow is the colour of happiness, I think representing Inez as envy on the brink of happiness is quite appropriate. Especially since that colour is still quite ugly and shallow, without much saturation.

On one hand yellow stands for freshness, positivity, clarity, energy, optimism, enlightenment, remembrance, intellect, honor, loyalty, and joy, but on the other, it represents cowardice and a deceiving personalities.
I think that Estelle is very bright on the outside and tries to display herself as a delicate lady. On the inside, Estelle knows that she has always been a coward, as she drowned her baby by throwing it off a balcony into a lake.

"There was a balcony overlooking the lake. While at first glance, you may not see through it, and it seems to be a smooth, faultless piece of glass, you don't have to look at it very hard before you begin to see through it. I think this represents Estelle's facade, because while she tries to put up the front of being perfect and not having any idea why she is in hell, it doesn't take long for the other characters to see through this to her shallow and selfish personality.

The symbol I would choose to represent Estelle would be a mirror. This is because Estelle is never prepared to inspect or reflect on her own qualities or mistakes, and instead diverts to those of others to take the attention off of herself. For example, when asked, on page 27, if Roger shot himself on her account, she shouts 'Leave me alone! It's- It's not fair, bullying me like that. I want to go! I want to go.' Here, when asked about her own life and the part she may have played in it, Estelle calls Garcin and Inez 'bullies' and flips the conversation onto their behaviour to escape any introspection. In this respect, like a mirror, she looks outward, rather than inward.

Garcin:
I chose a pink rose to symbolize Garcin. A pink rose is symbolic of infatuation. Infatuation is usually unjust and is usually labelled as affairs. Garcin's life was surrounding constant infatuation, even in hell. Jean-Paul Satre wrote, 'grasping her shoulders' and 'stinking of wine and women'. He clearly puts out Garcin's main interests as being surrounded with infatuation and therefore the pink rose sums him up perfectly.

Estelle - Balloon
I believe that a balloon is an appropriate symbol for Estelle. Balloons looks beautiful on the outside and are always colourful but inside their is nothing except air. This represents Estelle as she is beautiful on the outside and makes people happy such as her husband and the man that she had an affair with but on the inside she is shallow and does not have a deep personality. This is because she was "terribly poor and when an old friend of (her) people asked (her) to marry him (she) said yes. He was very well off." This shows that she married only for wealth which is a shallow trait.

Colour - Yellow Green
Green is generally a colour associated with money which Estelle has in abundance, and this particular shade usually indicates jealously, sickness and discord. Sickness is what kills Estelle and how she acts as a part of other people's lives, like her lover, who eventually killed himself from the grief her actions caused him. She also causes discord, in the hotel room, between Garcin and Inez. Jealously is evident from when she 'looks' back into the living world and sees her friend, Peter with another woman. She claims that he 'belongs' to her.

He also knew about the dominance he pressed against his wife, he described his wife's reaction to him coming back everyday as being a 'victim'.

Estelle - Symbol
The symbol I chose for Estelle is a mask made of glass. I chose this because as seen in the text, Estelle always tries to deny the reason she is in "hell" with the other two, thus using the mask to hide her true self. When asked about what she has done, she simply replies, "I haven't a notion, not the foggiest idea". She tries to hide the real reason as to why she is where she is, she tries to put on a mask in order to conceal herself. This doesn't work as the other two are able to discern that Estelle is lying, and coax out the truth. This is why I decided to make the mask out of glass - it's pretty fragile and can break easily, just like Estelle's fake identity. Estelle wasn't able to keep up the act of not knowing why she was in "hell", and a glass mask breaking represents this. (The green in the photo doesn't represent anything, I couldn't find any other glass masks)

The colour I would choose for Estelle is rouge, because it is a very strong and passionate shade of red. Although it represents blood and danger, which shows the evil side of her, since she murdered her child, shades of red can also display a sense of overconfidence and impulse. Also, her dramatic nature and vanity is represented when she says "Oh dear! My lipstick! I'm sure I've put it on all crooked.", which is strange, because although she is in "hell" and has died, she is still concerned about how she looks. Rouge also represents sexuality and passion, which is shown by her equation with Garcin, in order to make Inez feel uncomfortable, which makes her even more "fake", and sadistic.

Make-up was used very often for acting and plays back then which makes it seem like an act, and that she is "hiding" who she truly is. When one puts on blush, sometimes it is known as "putting her face on", which makes it seem like she is not who she says she is, and that she is two-sided. This is true because she tries to be confused as to why she is in hell, although she was aware of her malice and evil actions. When she is unable to find a glass to put on her make-up she begins feeling lost and says, "When I can't see myself I begin to wonder if I really and truly exist." Her make-up is used as a mask, and without it, her confident self has suddenly changed into someone who is doubtful.

Estelle - Mirror
I chose this symbol for Estelle, because a mirror serves a very one-dimensional purpose: to observe oneself. Estelle's desire for a mirror in the text again highlights her selfishness and sense of self-importance, as her appearance is of little concern considering the never-ending-ness (for want of a better word) of hell. I think that a mirror also represents Estelle's temperament, in that all appears calm and collected on the surface, but once any obstacles come in contact, the surface becomes scratched or shattered. This is like how when Estelle discovers her potential lover dancing with her friend. She tries to maintain that she is unmoved by the situation, that she doesn't care, but it soon becomes clear that she really does care, as she becomes agitated and angry the more she watches, ending up dancing around the room while she speaks. I believe that this self-absorbance and temperance is reflected in the symbol of a mirror.

For Estelle, the colour I choose for her would be a stylish dark red. Estelle likes her fashion, and would not dare to sit on a couch that clashed with her clothes, and in that sence she is greedy, and the red brings out the fury and anger in her when things do not go her way. Red is also the colour of blood, and the murder on her hands, as she killed her baby because it did not suit her for it to live. This selfishness and her belief of being above everyone else is clearly contridicted when she arrives in hell.

The symbol I chose for Garcin is a poison dart frog. The frog looks innocent and beautiful on the outside but is also highly poisonous. This symbolizes how to the outsider, Garcin seems like an alright person as he's a pacifist journalist but for those in his personal relationships, his actions are toxic and poisonous

I believe that a blue ringed octopus would represent Garcin quite accurately as it is often thought as a calm looking creature with a deep blue ring pattern and a seemingly harmless looking animal. Under the appearance of a mature, sophisticated and "harmless" character that is Garcin, we begin to see his true potential as a killer. The octopus is also reflective of the "toxic" abilities of Garcin, abusing his wife and taking advantage of her possible mental illness.

The symbol I would choose for Garcin is a poisonous mushroom. Although they may seem harmless, similar to edible mushrooms or just look visually attractive, they have the potential to kill humans. Garcin is similar in the sense that while he may seem like a reserved and mature man on first impressions, he is a deceitful and "toxic" person.

2. The symbol I chose for Estelle is a mirror. Mirrors are used to observe yourself, and are largely concerned with making yourself more attractive or checking that your appearance is alright. Throughout the text, Estelle wants a mirror to see herself in.
It also, uh, reflects her behaviour. Mirrors are seen as blank and inoffensive, but shatter easily when making hard contact with surfaces. Estelle attempts to seem blank and serene, but is actually quite emotional and angry about things

Inez Symbol: Rip (as in the ocean)

Inez behaves in a really tender way towards Estelle, "come and pay me a visit dear... here is a place on my sofa" but is extremely hostile towards men - "[ironically] - a hero!".

Although tender, she is also very intelligent and will use this to exploit people in order to make them hers, "I'm your lark mirror, my dear, and you can't escape me". Her intelligence can be demonstrated by her analysis of the situation that she is in. This intelligence can mask her personality, which is overall rather negative and not a much-desired one. She is like a rip in this manner - for the average person, difficult to spot and thus easy to be dragged in. If a man were to approach her, they would be dragged and forced into her hostility while a woman would be trapped by her as she tries to make them her own. The more you struggle, the worse the situation becomes, just like a rip. When trapped by a rip, one needs to know what to do in order to retain a chance of survival. Inez's personality is similar but slightly more irksome to deal with. She is, after all, a human, not a force of nature.

Garcin
Symbol: Ladybird (also known as a ladybird beetle)

The reason I have chosen a ladybird as the symbol for Garcin because ladybirds are very beautiful and harmless on the surface, similar to Garcin. However, when attacking a prey, they turn a bright colour and releases a toxic substance. This shows that although Garcin may look like he has good morals and is kind, he can be quite vicious as is evident through the mistreatment of his wife.

The colour I think represents the overall personality and temperament of Inez’s character is a jet black. I believe this because, like the colour black, Inez possesses a lot of darkness and negativity, seen when she has an affair with her cousin’s wife. Inez is portrayed to be completely honest about this, rather than trying to hide it to the other characters and appear redeeming. This can be seen, for example, when she states plainly on Page 29, “Human feeling? That’s beyond my range. I’m rotten to the core.” She accepts her flaws, negativity, and intensity, and never masks from others her twisted and dark nature with false elements of lightness. In this way, her personality is similar to the solidness and intensity of a jet black.
