Daisy's husband Tom Buchanan stands in the way of Gatsby's dream. Tom Buchanan isn't willing to give up Daisy so easily. Also Gatsby believes that Daisy never loved Tom, but when Daisy says "Oh, you want too much!" she cried to Gatsby. "I love you now – isn't that enough? I can't help what's past." She began to sob helplessly. "I did love him once – but I loved you too." (7.261). When Daisy told Gatsby that she also loved Tom Buchanan, it broke Gatsby's heart. Gatsby thought that he was Daisy's only lover and when Daisy said she also loved Tom, Gatsby realized he could not repeat the past.

"Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgiastic future that year by year recedes before us. It eluded us then, but that's no matter — tomorrow we will run faster, stretch out our arms farther . . . . And one fine morning — So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past."

"If it wasn't for the mist we could see your home across the bay," said Gatsby. "You always have a green light that burns all night at the end of your dock." Daisy put her arm through his abruptly, but he seemed absorbed in what he had just said. Possibly it had occurred to him that the colossal significance of that light had now vanished forever. Compared to the great distance that had separated him from Daisy it had seemed very near to her, almost touching her. It had seemed as close as a star to the moon. Now it was again a green light on a dock. His count of enchanted objects had diminished by one.

“It was one of those rare smiles with a quality of eternal reassurance in it, that you may come across four or five times in life. It faced--or seemed to face--the whole external world for an instant, and then concentrated on you with an irresistible prejudice in your favor.”

Gatsby does everything in his power to reach his green light which is Daisy and to repeat the past. The theme of the book is about time and how characters like Gatsby are stuck in time because they want to repeat the past. Gatsby wanted more than anything in the world to grasp his green light because he needed to leave that darkness and harness the light. Gatsby looked forward to his hopes and dreams but something in his past was not allowing him to move on like a small boat against the strong current of time. Gatsby could never get over his life with Daisy before the war and how happy he was. All Gatsby desired was to again repeat what happened five years ago and get the girl of his dreams back but he could never understand that repeating the past would lead to his downfall. So, Gatsby pushed himself to his goals but while paddling against the current he fell off and lost his fantasy of a perfect life. Early in the book we see Gatsby late at night looking at the edge of his dock at that green light across the bay where Daisy lives. Every night Gatsby saw that green light burn at the end of Daisy’s dock which inspired him to reach for Daisy and his goals.

The resolution of The Great Gatsby is that Jay Gatsby followed the green light which led to his downfall. By trying to repeat the past Gatsby ultimately ended up dead because of Daisy. Gatsby was so busy trying to get Daisy back and had all these parties just for her. At his funeral only a few people showed up because even though Gatsby was famous, he had no true friends.
