They created the first town called Cape Town which was founded by Jane Van Reibeeck. The first year slaves were smuggled from Europe to South Africa was in 1657. In 1913, black African citizens were forbidden from buying property in the country. The placement of the apartheid laws in 1948, "racial discrimination was institutionalized." (www-cs-students.stanford.edu) In 1953, The Public Safety Act and the Criminal Law Amendment Act were passed. According to the Disproportionate Treatment Circa 1978, "annual expenditure on education per pupil was $45 on Blacks, and $696 on Whites."  One profound international statement from the world was when South Africa was omitted from the global Olympic Games. One of the most respected activists in South Africa was Nelson Mandela. He was imprisoned from 1964-1990 because he was fighting the country's inequality. He became the President of South Africa 1994-1999. He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993. As the President of South Africa, he fought to end the apartheid. Another historical event was The Sharpville Massacre that happened in March 1960. It occurred at a police station that was supposed to be a peaceful protest  that quickly turned violent. According to the official inquest, "69 people were shot dead and 180 seriously wounded." This event generated outrage from across the globe. The rage forced change in South Africa. Another activist that fought for racial equality in South Africa was named, Walter Sisulu. Walter was a part of the National Congress (ANC.) The ANC is a social democratic political party. The black citizens created areas where they lived called, "Homelands."

Many of the causes stem from the poor government leadership, as well as, lack of education among the citizens. The corruption demonstrated by the government rule has trickled down to the citizens, whom now have a lack of respect for the law and authority.  "There can be no debate as to whether the public service is corrupt or not. This has been openly stated by leaders in government and the trade union movement." said, Peit Naude. The South African economy has suppressed many citizens financially and made it basically impossible to escape poverty. 
The education level that Black African citizens receive is inferior to the standard of education the white citizens receive. The amount of diseases that African people suffer from is so out of control that getting a hold of it is almost unattainable. As South Africa's leader, Zuma is a part of the South African Communist party.

Some of the pros have been creation of towns for the civilians, involvement in education, and government policies. One of the positive social impacts of modernization is the increase in health information that can be readily available to African citizens.Historically, gender roles have been that the male is the worker and the female is the housekeeper. In today's time, gender roles have evolved so that women can earn their own education.  When women are educated the output of gains will increase for the society as a whole. Another positive of educating the women citizens is to increase their education on hygiene and nourishment, therefore increasing the quality of life for their families.

Economic impacts of modernization have lead to an increase in technology and innovation for clean energy. They have produced clean energy by using the wind to send electricity to residents of South Africa. However, with the impacts of Modernization come negative impacts on the environment. One example of a negative impact on the environment is, deforestation. Deforestation occurs when commercial logging is not regulated, and many trees are used for everyday life for the citizens of South Africa. An example ofthe  political impacts of Modernization, South Africa used to support the Allied Forces. It's important to fight for equality of all human beings, and to support those who are activists. As an individual, I could participate in a Global Solution by sharing what I know with other people. It's important for all people to see the conditions of South Africa. One of my own personal solutions is to begin with the education of all young citizens. This means give all children an equal opportunity to be educated. I believe from the education will flow new innovations, new business, new fresh ideas of thinking, and will eventually impact all of South Africa in a positive way. Another solution could be to create a non-corrupt government system that advocates for the South African citizens.   The country of South Africa could pursue more education to create this plan of action, as well as, create a new government system. There are many deep rooted issues that have resulted from the apartheid. The  dictionary definition of a apartheid is,"a policy or system of segregation or discrimination on grounds of race." (dictionary.com)  There is a big problem with crime "...attempted murder was recorded on average 49.7 times daily in 2015."(https://africacheck.org/factsheets/factsheet-south-africas-201516-crime-statistics/) One of the top crimes that South Africa faces are the sexual offensives including, but not limited to, rape. "South Africa legal definition of rape is very broad. In the racial inequality divide, there is a lack of security and stability in the country. There are, "248,700 modern slaves in South Africa," according to Global Slavery Index.
