Philip level 1 question- I think that the kid was only afraid to be around Jim because of the circumstances.
Huck is starting to pick up on Tom's courageousness and his father's habits.
Hope's Question- You never know what happens when its just two people in a room
Garrett's- I think that Huck will get tired of always being on the run, but since he always searches for adventure.
Superstition conversation- I think that Twain did this because he is trying to set the scene and able to understand what they believe in.
They don't want to get their hopes up.
Never really sit and enjoy life always worrying.
Good point Ashley made about Huck being a hypocrite. I agree with this statement because Huck hated the way his father was always manipulating people and stealing.
Huck manipulated Jim by using Tom's name to get him to go do something.
I disagree with Dara, because Huck and Jim are both in the same position right now in the story and they both have to run from the past and stay hidden.
What is the line between right and wrong and who draws that line??
Mrs. Hebert's level 3--- Yes there is a difference.. Sort of see it. Religion based off a story, superstition based on weird signs of natural, rare, occurrences. Biological circumstances.
Huck is starting to learn to become self-dependent correctly.
Manipulation point??????? about him dressing up as a girl and lying about who he was TWICE!!!!
Civilized v. Criminal (idk the word to put)...
Racism is focused on it in the book to help set the scene... ?
Dara's quote!!! YESSS
Satirizes racism because it shows that people actually thought it was okay to discriminate and be rude to people just because of color...
I don't think he did agree with slavey....

I like Hope's level 3 question. Society has changed and families have a different structure than in the 19th century. As society has gotten more progressive, alternate families have become normal in our society, rather than solely relying on the mother-father-child structure of prior centuries.

Garrett's level 3 question raised a good point- when does the fun of running away wear off? It seems so exciting at first, being able to escape the harsh truths of reality to live an alternate life free of the labels cast upon us. After a while, though, the adrenaline will wear away, leaving despair and hopelessness. After days of living off the land and hiding from those searching for you, maintaining the fantasy you have created, stress sets in. You long for the comforts of modern society. You wish you had a family-cooked meal. Or a family at all. This calls for moderation. Instead of escaping your problems in a physical sense, do so mentally. Find a hobby or some way to express why you want to run away and create something from it. Be productive. In the end, this serves a better end than running away and casting a shroud over the problems that first plagued you and will continue to plague you until you face them.

I like the conversation about taking risks. Ever since Huck was on the run, he quit being so imaginative and carefree as he was with Tom. He had to maintain the idea that he was dead, so he had to take calculated ricks to ensure the fantasy stayed intact. That's why he quit acting so foolish and started calculating the methods it took to survive on an island in the middle of the Mississippi River. He learned from his mistakes by not letting smoke be seen from across the river and by being careful of the island's animals and overall environment. Through his running away, Huck has grown towards being an intelligent young man rather than the ignorant boy he was before.

In response to Alex's comment about irony- This isn't the only bit of irony in the book. When Huck visits town, he talks about bad luck with the woman he talks to. Yet he had good luck by finding out that the townsfolk were coming to the island at midnight. Because of this, he was able to escape with Jim on time. Irony plays a pivotal part of the plot and is a major element of the book.

I enjoyed the fact that the class brought up the connection between parents and the way their kid comes up. Many children tend to follow their parents and household beliefs, and even look up to their parents as role models. That being said, the inevitable irony of Huck following in the footsteps of a man in which he hated and resented, truly highlights this concept of parents being a primary source of children's actions and beliefs.

I response to logan's comment about my comment-- To what extent should you "match society" by changing yourself? The only problem with that is that you would have to go against your own beliefs. And it may not have been so much so in the time the novel takes place but, in a society in which you will never be perfect to all of society and one side will always be against you... How do you conform to "match society." Political views for example-- If you conform to very conservative views, the other side still has differing opinions... If you conform to very liberal views, the same thing happens. There is never any way to please everyone at once so how does one go about it?
