Alliteration - rifles' rapid rattle - rrr -> sounds like a machine gun. Sad shires. Glimmers of goodbyes. Dusk drawing down. 
Repetition/anaphora - only x2, no/nor/not - something is missing. There is a lack of something. 

The message and theme:
How meaningless the war is. It is undignified to be a soldier - not a proper life or death. It is hard to believe in anything anymore - religion is questioned - how can a funeral be so important, when the ones, who protect the rest of us don't get a funeral. It is hard to believe in anything anymore, when we (humanity) slaugther each other like this.  How does the poem reflect the time it was written in? Religion <> meaning/meaninglessness, first world war (poem from 1917), written at the time, the war took place. -> loss of faith in religions, ethical and social values. The view of life and humanity changes after the war.
