This was home, a safe haven and the start of Gerda's Holocaust experience. While she was here, Gerda was still naive and had plenty of hope that her family and her would make it. She still was able to choose to be hungry, feel sorry for herself and act in ways that later she could only dream of, such as wearing what she wanted, attend lessons for learning English and leave her home while not feeling afraid. The photo attached is the "Jew badge" that Gerda wore whenever she left her home. While she still had to be careful, Gerda was allowed to go to her friend's place and almost anywhere as long as she wore this. In a sense, this provided security for her as if to say "I will be safe- No one will think I'm breaking the rules if I wear this."

I am unsure of the exact place, but the book mentioned a place about 10 minutes away from Bielitz (where their home was). In this place we were able to see Gerda grow more mature and be more aware of the situation and things around her. She learned to be silent as necessary such as when she decided not to tell her parents of when they could have passed away together overnight and when the soldiers came into their place in search of anther person. In the ghettos, Gerda was able to learn that the important things in life are health and family as she promises her dad to live as well as being grateful for the orange that her mother gave her. Attached is a rations sheet that would be similar to what they would have received at the time.

This is Abek's home and it was getting to this place that Gerda learned about holding her honor to a higher standard. Gerda refused to be "put into her place" while talking to the Officer. Because Gerda chose to be defiant, the Officer backed down and gave her what she wanted. Here Gerda learned that to be an adult one must be mentally strong. Attached in a photo of a SS guard.

This is the camp that was referred to as Dulag that Gerda decided to go to. While making the decision to go here, Gerda learned more about her as a person. That she would rather be doing labor and in a camp detached and free than to be with Abek's family while chained to the idea of being his partner for life. At this camp, Gerda also learned about having her prejudice against those with the Holocaust movement- that there can also be nice people in the mix as well, in this case Frau Kügler. Attached is a photo of a weaving mill during the Holocaust.
