Creating this space for students aligns with the mindset standards from the American School Counseling Association's (ASCA) national model. This mindset encapsulates what I believe a student needs to have the ability to be successful. How a student gets treated by faculty and peers will significantly affect their progress in school. When students' mental health is valued as much as their academic well-being, they have a greater opportunity to thrive. This is because they feel more accepted and heard if they face struggles and have the support they need to succeed in school. This will build "self-confidence in the ability to succeed" and create a "positive attitude toward work and learning" (ASCA, 2019). 

School Counselor's Role: As an advocate, I will ensure that all students are treated fairly and have equal opportunities to learn and grow in a safe environment. I will use ASCA's mindset and behavior standards to accommodate student success in group and individual counseling. I will collaborate with families and other staff to ensure student achievement and success. School counselors must advocate for students to ensure that they are all treated fairly and with respect. It is essential to ensure all students and their families have the proper resources and materials to be successful. 

Ethical Standards: The ASCA Ethical Standards "specify the principles of ethical behavior necessary to maintain the highest standard of integrity, leadership, and professionalism" (ASCA, 2019). These standards are in place for school counselors to refer to when making decisions. They are a standard practice to protect both the counselor and the students. 

Vision Statement: I believe in providing students with a safe environment that makes them feel supported and respected. I believe nurturing students' social and emotional well-being will encourage future academic success.
