“The rules have been established and enforced mainly by the street-oriented, but on the streets the distinction between the street and decent is often irrelevant. Everyone knows that if the rules are violated their penalties” This quote reminds me of the entire book in general but mainly the guys in the book. The word penalties really stood out to me because when i think of the word I think of sports and that's a “boy” thing and then I connect that with the rules being passed down each generation. The rules affected the girls but in the book they seem to not nearly as much as the boys because of the way that the idea of the being a man was such a big part of the streets.

The line in paragraph number 4 that I chose says, “In the troublesome public environment of the inner city as people increasingly feel buffeted by forces beyond their control what one deserves in the way of respect becomes more and more problematic and uncertain.” This line reminded me of the rules and how they seem to blind people or morph their understanding of how to treat people because they are focused on following these rules and getting revenge, (rule No. 3). This especially reminds me of Will’s only examples of men, his father and Shawn. The next line reminded me specifically of Shawn and what he was like when he was alive. “The person whose very appearance- his clothing, demeanor and way of moving- deters transgression feels that he possesses and may be considered by others to possess, a measure of respect.”

Jackets, sneakers, gold jewelry, reflect not just a person's taste, which tends to be tightly regulated among adolescents of all social classes, but also a willingness to possess things that may require defending.”

This quote reminds me of Buck because on page 261 in the book it says, “Everybody knew/ Buck was always flossin’,/ always flashy. But nobody/ would touch him because/ of his pops.” This line shows that Buck was always wearing expensive things just like this quote is going into detail about. Buck relates to this quote because he was one of those kids who “play an important and complicated role in establishing self image.”
