In Becoming Butterflies, by Anne Rockwell, she writes about a teacher, Miss Dana, who brings 3 striped caterpillars into her classroom. The children in the classroom get to watch as the caterpillars eat, grow, and shed there skin, until eventually they form a chrysalis and hatch from it. The Children in the class get very excited to see the butterfly drying its wings off, but then they get sad as the teacher says that they are going to release the butterflies. The teacher explains that they are doing this because the butterflies need to fly down south to Mexico for the winter. The students then receive a letter during the winter, from students in Mexico, with a picture of their butterflies, hanging from a tree.

This gives an example as to how we will use a bar graph for the students to compare measurements at different stages of a caterpillar with having them rounding to whole numbers when measuring with a ruler. Solve one- and two-step “how many more” and “how many less” problems using information presented in a scaled picture graph or a scaled bar graph.
